Character: Gu Mi Ho Fandom: My Girlfriend is a Nine-tailed Fox; 내 여자친구는 구미호 (Nae Yeojachinguneun Gumiho) Character Notes: History: Five hundred years ago there was a nine-tailed fox. This fox took human form and was so beautiful that all the men forgot to work when they saw her. The women of the village were so enraged that they prayed to the Three Gods Grandmother to fix things. The Three Gods Grandmother (Also known as Grandmother Samshin, which can be interpreted as a mountain god/spirit) decided to try and marry the fox off thinking that might fix the situation.
However, the women of the village, not wanting to give up their husbands or their sons to marry a fox, spread a rumor that the kumiho would eat the liver of whoever married her. Left with no other option, the Three Gods Grandmother stole the fox’s tails and sealed her away in a painting where she stayed until she tricked Cha Dae Woong into freeing her. In exchange for being freed, the fox gave him her foxbead (the source of her power) to keep him alive when he sustained serious injuries trying to flee from her.
Personality: Being sealed away in a painting for five hundred years has left Mi Ho with a very limited understanding of the human world (Not that she understood things all that well before). She is very curious about the world, and does her best to keep to keep a chipper outlook going. Mi Ho is more than a little naïve, and childish. She demands food sometimes and pouts when denied. As with early gumiho lore, she trusts people immediately because she doesn’t know any better.
However, this does not mean she is just a bundle of sunshine and hope. Sometimes hurt feelings and her temper make her say or do things that she immediately regrets. Throughout the series she’s lies (first for selfish reasons, and then later for selfless ones) to try and manipulate a situation in her favor (or Dae Woong’s favor.) Her favorite bargaining chip with Dae Woong is the foxbead itself.
She desperately wishes to become human. It's a motivation that later changes into her wishing to become human for Dae Woong as she slowly falls in love with him.
Other: Unlike the newer stories of gumiho/kumiho, Mi Ho does not eat livers. She does have a heightened sense of smell and reflexes, and she has super strength and speed. She’s no Flash, but she can definitely outrun any human.
Her power seems to be divided equally between the foxbead and her nine tails. So, if she loses the bead, she loses half her power.
Under the new moon, her tails come out.
Her eyes turn bright blue when she begins reverting to her fox body or uses her powers.
Water weakens her because she can’t feel the chi of the land when surrounded by it. Because of this it also terrifies her, and she will panic so much if trapped on a boat that she will begin to revert to her fox form.
First Person (entry type): [The laptop drops and Mi Ho accidentally activates the speech to text program as she picks it up. It appears as Hangul.] Ah! No, no, no. Dae Woong will be angry again if -- it’s writing. How is it writing? You don’t have a brush. Human things are so odd.
Stop writing now, book. Dae Woong won’t like me writing so much on his parchment. If he has to buy more we won’t have money for meat! I wanted cow tonight too. [There’s a few nonsensical characters as she leans in close to sniff the laptop.] I don’t even smell ink. Books must have changed too. Aish*! No, book, what are you doing now? Stop. Stop. Please stop. You can’t …duck? Show me a cow instead. Hey, book, show me a cow. I want cow. Fine, Dae Woong can bring me cow and you can keep your ducks.
Third Person: The trouble with trying to be human was that it required you to act like a human. Mi Ho couldn’t show how strong she was, she couldn’t run as fast as she was able. It was especially frustrating when Dae Woong refused to let her use abilities that came naturally to her so she would seem more human and then specifically tell her she wasn’t human. Mi Ho didn’t know what to think of that contradiction.
Dae Woong also rarely left her alone, which was why she was waiting as patiently as she was able outside his university. He’d said only people were allowed inside, so she’d sighed and made her way to the bench outside.
The campus was full of scholars with their packs that they carried books in. She wasn’t sure what the books were about because Dae Woong only let her see the one and it was written in a language she didn’t understand, but one day she would get to read them. Humans read books, and she was determined to be human. Mi Ho already had a name, and a friend, so she felt she was on her way.
“Mi Ho!” Her head popped up. Dae Woong was still a ways off, but her hearing was better than most people’s. She jumped to her feet, happily trotting over to him. He never looked too happy to see her, but that was just because she kept threatening to eat his liver.
“Dae Woong!” Mi Ho grabbed his hand, which he promptly yanked away. One day, he wouldn’t do that either. When she became a human, he would hold her hand and they would be real friends. Until then, she just had to keep him close. Mi Ho pouted for a moment then quickly recovered. “Can we go eat now?”
Teacher Park Dong Joo said I could be human, but it would take one hundred days to complete. Dae Woong would hold the bead, I know he would, but would he do it for a hundred days? What if he leaves? Teacher says you can’t trust a human’s promise but…Dae Woong would have to hold it. Humans aren't as bad as he thinks. Teacher is very smart, though. Maybe I should keep saying I will eat Dae Woong.
…it’s okay if he thinks that, isn’t it? It will make him stay by my side. If he stays that long, then he will have to like me. I’ll be human by then. Dae Woong won’t have any reason to tell me to leave if I’m human. I can do that. It’s only a hundred days, that isn’t very long for humans either. Nothing’s very long for humans.
That’s okay. For Dae Woong, I can do that. I’m going to be human, no matter what. Dying will be worth it. This will be better than those movies, because this will have a happy ending, I can feel it.
