Character Notes:

History: Hibana's upbringing was not ideal, to say the least. Raised by a (literally) insane mother, her childhood was warped right from the beginning. It's hard to tell what Hibana's mother's goal was, but whatever it was, it involved attempting to morph her daughter into the perfect lady.

This was achieved not only through etiquette lessons and a good education but torture and abuse both physical and psychological. Hibana was, to put it simply, not allowed to make mistakes, no matter how large or small. Wetting the bed would earn her a world of pain; throwing up would invite even worse punishment. All of this Hibana took quietly and even with gratitude; her mother was helping her. And so it was in that way that Hibana was conditioned to deal with horrific amounts of pain, often in bizarre ways- her mother utilized old-fashioned and long-forgotten torture techniques, the names and methods of which are still memorized by Hibana to this day. Hibana was made to endure great amounts of pain until she could no longer feel it at all. In that way, she would finally be able to become perfect.

But then something happened that Hibana didn't understand. She came home one day to see her mother hanging from the ceiling with a rope around her neck. Confused, she carried on with her life, taking herself to and from school and coming home to talk to a swiftly-rotting corpse. It isn't quite clear how long Hibana carried on like this with no one the wiser, but it was long enough for her mother's corpse to reduce to an almost skeletal state. This is a good indication that Hibana has no surviving family, because nobody noticed what had happened. Hibana continued to 'hear' her mother speaking to her long after she was dead- it seems that she still does not perceive that her mother had actually died.

However, though her mother was gone, her influence had long ago deeply affected Hibana. When a little boy in her class flipped her skirt, she swiftly decided to 'punish' him for the embarrassment he had caused her. She dismembered and buried him in the garden in front of her school. She hadn't done a good job of hiding his body, though, and it was discovered quickly. When she was confronted, Hibana was confused; hadn't she done a good thing? She punished the boy for being naughty. She was soon after put in Japan's only publicly operative prison, Deadman Wonderland.

It was not long after that that Hibana was selected for something special. She would be removed from death row if she could withstand the trials of joining the prison's elite security team- Undertaker. The prison hid many secrets, the most important one being the presence of a secret underground level keeping people known as Deadmen. These Deadmen were given the ability to control their blood after the Great Tokyo Earthquake. This ability made them just as dangerous as they were useful, though, and the assistant warden of the prison, Tamaki Tsunenaga, found the need for a specialized team to control them when things got too rough. Hibana was selected from a pool of the hardest criminals; even of these, not many survived the 'training' to become an Undertaker. This training is implied to have been more like torture, where the 'recruits' were either to die or endure. But torture was nothing new to Hibana, and she flew through the requirements with flying colours.

Hibana had finally found her niche. She made for a perfect Undertaker, concerned with perfection, order, and rules. She had no qualms about 'punishing' the bad little 'birds' (all Deadmen are given a bird designation for a codename), because in her mind, she was helping. Like other Undertakers, Hibana was also given a sword with the ability to negate the power of any Branch of Sin (the Deadmen's power) it touched. She soon settled into a routine of homework and Undertaker work, and she soon escalated to the position of third squad leader.

As of the point Hibana is being taken from, she has been in prison for about a year and a half and is seven years old now. She is somehow able to maintain her education and is in second grade. Much of her time is dedicated to homework, and, for a little girl living in prison, Hibana is alarmingly happy with her life.

Personality: Hibana is a little bundle of joy. She's really the ideal little girl- a sweet little darling with soft blonde hair and wide, innocent blue eyes. She's astoundingly polite for her age- seven- and her manners are impeccable. She addresses all adults with respect and often ends her conversations with an adorable little curtsey. Hibana is perfect, really- unsettlingly perfect. It's almost eerie; there has to be a catch. And there is. For all of Hibana's naivety and sweet smiles, she's not what she seems to be. Though she's a hard-working, intelligent, well-mannered little girl, Hibana is also a groomed murderer and psychopath.

Hibana has no memories which do not include her mother's presence and influence. This is important in coming to understand her character; she experiences the world from a very, very different point of view than most. After all, when your entire life has been warped and controlled and you have been conditioned to believe certain things and behave in a certain way by someone who controlled every aspect of you, it would be almost impossible to change your world-view. The world, as Hibana sees it, is an unfair place, and the only way to earn her place in it- to earn, as her mother advised, the respect she could come to deserve- would be to be perfect. To be perfect is to excel at everything, to never make any mistake, and to be a flawless example of what it means to be a lady. Hibana was forbidden to fail at this, which made perfect sense to her- after all, if her beloved mother said it was that way, why would it not be true?

Many people have the desire to be perfect- to Hibana, it is not only a want, but a need. She does not know how to comprehend anything else but perfection and the concept of being a 'proper lady'. She is obsessed with schedules, manners, and punishing those she perceives as having 'bad meat'. The most interesting part of this all is that Hibana truly does not see anything wrong with this. She is confused when others point out to her that her view is wrong. She holds everyone to the same standards she holds to herself and will constantly nitpick at others. For the most part, these traits are harmless- unless you imply that Hibana is not a proper lady. She grows extremely violent to the point of hysteria at this, and will not hesitate to attempt to kill (or kill, as it has been in the past) the one that said it.

When it comes to life outside of her work as an Undertaker, Hibana is actually not all that hard to get along with. In many ways she is like a normal little girl. When her homework is done, she likes playing with toys and colouring books. She grows flustered easily, and despite her insistences otherwise and her refined-sounding speech, her childishness tends to show quite a bit. She sometimes talks in third person, and she has thrown temper tantrums before.

Personality continued: It is because of her mother that Hibana is desperate for validation. All she wants to be told is that she is perfect. She talks so much about being a 'proper lady' not only to remind others but to convince herself of it, too. She wants others to see her for what she thinks she is- perfect- and if she can't have that, well, she'll punish them for being so rude. Hibana truly is a child; though her perspective is warped and she is already a well-established murderer, the way she deals with everything is from a child's point of view. This is probably the most tragic aspect of her character- her mother's attempts to make her into a flawless person only proved to shelter Hibana even more. Hibana isn't at fault; she's what her mother made her. She's still young, though, and it's hard to tell if she can be helped or changed with the right influence. We know, at least, that she probably would not be very receptive to someone reaching out to her. It's possible that Hibana may show a great deal of improvement if she were actually taken out of the horrible environments she's been raised in (from an abusive home to death row in prison) into a place where she could have a chance to interact with normal people. The Undertakers have been said in canon to be impossible to rehabilitate, but Hibana is still young. Whatever the possibilities are, though, Hibana does not want to change. She's content enough with her role- being an Undertaker is important and prestigious, and it gives her good reason to punish others. As long as Hibana feels like she has a place in the world and that that place is important, well... Everything else just doesn't matter, including the lives of others. The world is better off without people like that, anyway...

Right?

Other: Hibana runs on a very strict schedule and is always keen on maintaining this. She also seems to have a fondness for coloring books, and so it could be reasonably said that her hobbies may extend to other childlike things.

I feel that I should also mention Hibana's abilities; as an Undertaker, she is tasked with controlling and maintaining the prisoners. Her given weapon is a large sword, which she can somehow wield easily despite the fact that it is easily at least twice as tall as she is (LINK). Manga physics, I guess. Like other Undertaker weapons, Hibana's sword nullifies the effect of any Branch of Sin it touches. This capability to disable powers only applies to Deadmen, though; if she used her sword against anyone else, it would just be a sword. It's hard to tell if Hibana is unusually strong or if there's something special about her sword that aids her in carrying it. It's likely to be a bit of both, considering the fact that Hibana's mother trained her to be strong and the trials of becoming an Undertaker are said to be fatal to most who undergo it, and only the strongest candidates survive. That said, Hibana is still seven, and does not display any extraordinary physical capabilities beyond her Undertaker duties.

Additional Links: None, actually, because this series is unfortunately too obscure to have its own wiki, much less one with a page for a side character like Hibana.

First Person (entry type):

[ an exquisite little voice is talking. it's clear that the speaker is a little girl. ]

Hello, community. It is Daida Hibana. I have almost finished my homework, so please do me the courtesy of listening. I would like to take a survey, [ there's the soft sound of a crayon drifting smoothly across paper. ] one that is very important to completing my next assignment.

This lady would like to know about your careers. You see, Hibana is being asked to find out what she would like to do when she... [ her voice suddenly draws tight, sharply annoyed; ] ...grows up. That is a strange assignment, because Hibana is already grown up. [ a bit calmer now. ] Still, it is only proper of a lady to accomplish the things that are asked of her with grace.

So, please, community. Tell me what you do for a living, and if your work is satisfactory. After all, no adult can call themselves proper until they have accomplished something great.

Third Person:

There is something to be said for the way they treat her in prison. Hibana thinks that it's because this is a place where only the most important people come to stay. Genkaku may spend his days in his room with his guitar on his lap, strumming out songs that sound more like noise to the little girl than real music, but Hibana is content to move about. She visits the little caged birds in their cells, peering in through the windows and smiling at them when they look up to notice her. 'I am just checking on you,' she coos sweetly when they glare, their eyes warily taking in the sight of the large object strapped to her back.

She sometimes walks hand-in-hand with one of the prison guards, because she's not tall enough yet to slide her arm through his like any other lady would. Soon, she tells herself to placate her concerns. She just needs to wait a few more years, and then she'll be tall and slender just like mama was. The guard always smiles at her when he drops her off at her room, and Hibana feels pleased with herself. Of course, she reassures herself, of course he should smile. Who would not enjoy the company of a lady?

Her room is always immaculately clean. The walls are pink and the bed is always made neatly with crisp white sheets. Her large oak desk sits beneath a barred window, buffed to a shine. When Hibana sits at it, her feet don't touch the floor. She carefully tacks her crayon drawings up on the walls, perfectly symmetrical. They're pictures of the people she knows- Genkaku, the Warden, some of the Deadmen- and some of them are pictures of the things that show up in her head sometimes. The former makes up a series of charming portraits; the latter is, to say the least, very, very red. She buys all of her possessions with her own Cast Points, and is proud of this. It makes her feel smug, secure, an adult. A refined lady who provides for her own needs. Hibana does not need anyone to take care of her. Mama, you approve, right?

She is thankful to Tamaki Tsunenaga. Though she does not blame him for wanting her on his side- after all, she is so skilled, so smart, so talented- he's given her a place to be, and it would only be proper of her to acknowledge that. But not too much, Hibana reminds herself. A lady never overdoes it.

She nudges the body of the Deadman with the toe of her mary-jane shoe and wrinkles her nose when his blood splashes onto it. It isn't easy being perfect.
