Character: Charles Gunn

Fandom: Angel

Character Notes:

History: Gunn grew up on the streets on Los Angeles in a crime- and demon-infested neighborhood. He was part of a street gang that focused on trying to eliminate (or at least reduce) the amount of demons that made the town even more dangerous than it already was. They didn't tag overpasses or identify themselves by wearing identifying colors, either. Though there was a definite sense of brotherhood, it wasn't united and allied against other gangs. Just vampires. For a long time, the gang and its members were his life, and Gunn funneled every bit of energy he had and almost every cent he came by into it.

The only other thing that Gunn had any real concern with was his little sister, Alonna, who he had taken care of since they were both young. She was a perfect representation of everything that he was fighting to keep safe up until the day that she was bitten by and turned into a vampire. Years later, that is still something that bothers him, though hell if he will admit that to anyone. The realization that one gang of slightly over-zealous demon fighters in the Badlands of L.A. couldn't do everything was what finally led Gunn to working on the side with Angel and his crew.

A note - in his late teens, he was convinced that he had no future, and wasn't overly concerned by that. Believing his own life to be of little importance, he signed away his soul in exchange for a truck.

As he began to work more and more frequently with Angel Investigations (a team composed at that point of two humans and a vampire), Gunn's stark black-and-white viewpoints were drawn into question again and again. He wasn't used to moral gray areas, and he wasn't used to the existence of demons who weren't trying to eat him. Initially, he regarded work with the vampire as a paying side-job, but the gigs let him feel like he was making an actual difference when it came to fighting evil, and Gunn got a little hooked on the rush. He was jumpy and distrustful around even the most benign demons for a long time, and still often is, but he no longer has the desire to slaughter everything that isn't human. Eventually, he was integrated as an actual member of the team, not just a dude who worked for them when they needed some extra muscle.

This is his history up until the end of the second season, and if my information is correct from the current cast members at DDD, they’re at the beginning – so, the rest of this stuff will happen in-game.

Personality: Charles Gunn has always been a little bit on the hasty side. Having grown up the way he did (more on that in the History section), he tends to make decisions with little deliberation, since time spent waffling between choices is time that's been wasted. He tends to see things through distinct black and white lenses – good things are good and bad things are bad, with little distinction between them, though that, too, is something he has worked on over the past year or so, especially when it comes to working with Angel and his crew.

Gunn is, most of the time, very confident. He grew up on the streets of Los Angeles, fighting vampires and the occasional other spook, and an environment like that never really afforded anyone a lot of self-doubt. He is sometimes made a little uncomfortable by the fact that Wesley and Fred (and Angel to an extent) can completely talk over his head when it comes to science or history or other topics of conventional, book-learned intelligence, but is normally able to get over that quickly enough by reminding himself that The Muscle is just as important as The Brain when it comes to the kinds of cases that Angel Investigations gets.

He is also fiercely protective, which stems in part from the way that he grew up on the streets – people who didn't watch out for each other didn't last long, and it's hard not to grow attached to people with whom you risk your life on a regular basis. Gunn will and has murdered to keep someone he cares about “clean,” even though he regards the act as both despicable and disgusting.

Gunn is loyal, but does not trust easily. He is also incredibly competitive.

Other: Gunn doesn't have any supernatural powers (he's taken from before his brain is canonically injected with lawyer juice), but he did grow up in an environment that kept him scrambling to stay in shape and at the top of his game. He is decently quick on his feet, but relies more on the 'fight' than the 'flight' instinct. Gunn has taken vampires before, and demons, too, with the help of his old gang, though that's really more of a testament to their teamwork abilities than to the superior individual strength of any of its members. He is very skilled in hand-to-hand combat (and can more than hold his own against the average, run-of-the-mill vampire), but unfortunately has never had any sort of formal training, instead just relying on what he learned on and off of the streets as a sort of back-alley brawler. Fortunately, he also has a sharp mind, and is a decent tactician, since you really can't keep a rag-tag group of vampire fighting boys alive on the streets for long without a decent grasp of fighting tactics. He has an aptitude for using weapons, though again no formal training, and really, really likes big axes.

First Person (entry type): Man, I am about to die of hunger.

[The video feed reveals Gunn to be sitting at a desk of some sort. It’s the check-in counter at the Hyperion Hotel, and his brow is crooked a little bit in irritation. As cranky as his expression is, he seems to be otherwise unoccupied as he regards the screen with a frown.]
Some words of advice for anyone listening: you don’t sit a man behind a desk for two hours when you run out to go shopping, whether or not you think some fancy-ass client is supposed to be showing up with a new case. You definitely don’t leave him by himself without any food in the kitchen, and –

[He takes the opportunity to jab his finger accusingly at the screen.]

If you’re watching this, Cordy? You had best be bringing me back a cheeseburger.

Third Person: Gunn figured that if he were a little more awake or a little more interested in metaphysics that the movie Fred had dragged him to might have been more interesting to him. As it was, he was barely able to sit up straight in the stiff theater chair, much less balance the large tub of popcorn on his lap.

Not that he was unhappy about the situation he was in. From what he could tell, Fred was completely consumed by the film, and Gunn found himself more interested in the fascinated part of her lips and the forward lean of her body than by any of the lofty concepts in the movie.

He settled the popcorn for the hundredth time between his knees, trying not to dump it out onto the floor as he ducked his head against his shoulder and masked a yawn as subtly as he knew how. The chair wasn't comfortable, but he had slept in worse, and it was a little hot, but when was it anything else in Los Angeles?

Gunn shifted his shoulders and only realized how fidgety he was being when Fred cast him a slightly concerned look; he flashed her a winning smile, mouthing “great movie!” and inclining his head toward the screen, before securing the popcorn one last time (clumsily scooping a handful into his mouth as he did) and scrabbling for some footing in the film.

'Pretty girl facing an ethical dilemma meets pretty boy with a trust fund,' he summarized to himself after a minute of watching witty dialogue while he laboriously blinked heavy-lidded eyes and reminded himself to read up on the plot online so that he could at least pretend to have understood when Fred gushed about it later.
