Personality: Mai is a fairly average high school student. She is very optimistic, which plays into her spiritual powers. Her latent psychic abilities allow her to discern who is innocent and who/what is a risk. Because of this when she believes in someone she’ll believe in them no matter what. Even when the odds are against that person and things look bad, she’ll continue to believe. Even when it comes to her own life she’s very upbeat. Both of her parents are dead and she’s mostly supporting herself completely. Despite this she’s still very cheerful and happy with her life. Because she is an orphan though, she’s very attached to the family she’s made with Naru and the rest of the team. She’s very loyal to them, even if some of them (Naru, Ayako, and Masako) often get on her nerves. Even if they argue, she cares about them all very much.
She does have a short temper, but is good at holding it back in most cases. Her temper often flairs up around Naru and his attitude, as well as Ayako and Masako from time to time. For the most part her feelings are written right on her face. Mai has little patience for people who are outright rude. If someone is rude enough she’ll make her feelings known; loudly. It gets her in trouble sometime, but she doesn’t like people getting away with being rude to her or her friends. The shortness of her temper also leads into her jumping to conclusions. When she first begins working at SPR she jumps the conclusions about cases after learning only a small about of information about spirits. However, even though she spouts some information without backing it up, she actually learns very quickly. This is in part because of her psychic intuition. She’s very curious and ready to learn new things. When she doesn’t know something about a case she isn’t afraid to ask. She’d rather be informed than make mistakes that might cause problems.
More than anything she just wants to help and contribute as part of the team. When things become dangerous in later cases she refuses to step back, and instead she learns warding incantations to protect herself. She doesn’t like to be a burden since she’s taken care of herself for a while now. Through the process of the series she goes from taking care of equipment and serving tea to finding major leads that help solve cases. However, she is very much run by her emotions. While this does help her out, it leads her to trouble as well.
