Character: Simon Bellamy Fandom: Misfits Character Notes: History: Although his age is unknown, it is assumed Simon is in his late teens based on still fitting into the "young offender" category - but he is able to legally drink and by alcohol in the U.K., so he has to be at least 18. His family situation is not known, other than the fact that he has a sister who is 12 years old. His history is only known through the little that he has described, and it is only important to finding how he became the way that he is now.
Simon used to be friends with his next door neighbor. Their friendship was courtesy at its best, and nothing more. The boys grew up, separated, and started to not talk as often. Simon's neighbor decided it would be fun to pick on Simon and tease him daily. Simon is a product of years of bullying and this has put him into the place he's at. Prior to the start of the series, this neighbor of his sent a mass text out to his "friends" and invited people to a party. Simon received one, and thinking he wanted to apologize, showed up. He bought him a drink, and then this guy basically told Simon it was a mistake and meant for another Simon.
Enraged (and filled with alcohol), Simon goes home, but he stops by the neighbors house. He throws a rag covered in gasoline and lights it. Well, the house starts to burn, and Simon hears a cat inside. He realized that the cat wasn't responsible, and takes a piss through the mail slot. Well, the guy's mother comes home to this, and Simon ends up in trouble and put in community service.
Prior to community service, due to his anger and the crime, Simon spent some time in a psychological ward where a girl named Lucy developed an obsession with him. Unable to turn down friendship, Simon was kind to her. He left with a promise of returning and visiting (he never kept this promise).
Simon started Community service with five others. On the first day the storm that changed everything happens. Simon was granted the ability to become Invisible now, as a result of the storm. And the others gain abilities as well. Their parole officer, Tony, also gains an ability. Though he doesn't really live long enough to understand.
One of the five other kids gets killed brutally by their probation worker, and Simon is the first to figure out something is wrong. He discovers his invisibility here when the others of the group don't notice him when he's speaking up about what is wrong. Well, all in all during this community service, their probation worker gets killed. Simon comes up with the plan that allows them to hide the bodies. And permanently.
Throughout the first part of the series, Simon spends his time being mocked by others there. He gains interest in Sally, the new probation worker, and at the same time is chatting with a girl online known as "Shygirl18". He steals one of Tony's credit cards and uses it to book a flight to Spain to keep the cops guessing where the now missing Tony is.
Simon develops a close friendship with her throughout this part of the series, as well as getting a crush on Sally. At one point during the series, "Shygirl18" tells Simon that he should just go for it and ask Sally out. The season ends with Simon figuring out that Sally and their former probation worker, Tony, were engaged. Sally was posing as "Shygirl18" to trick him and figure out what he and the others had done. Simon gets enraged and during everything he kills Sally. He hides her body in the Community center's freezer. Nathan, one of the other ASBO/young offenders, dies after he is rescued by Superhoodie (this is when he makes the first appearance)!
Early on into the second part of the series (thus far), after unearthing Nathan (who is immortal now), Simon encounters Lucy once again. Lucy is able to shape shift, and she tries to interfere with the friendships Simon has made, jealous of them. At this point the others find out about Sally being killed by Simon. Lucy witnesses and almost goes to the police, Simon pleads with her that this is the best time of his life. She does not give him up, and Simon promises that he will come visit her again.
The next couple parts of the series aren't as important for Simon. We learn that when he does drugs, it reverses his power and makes him magnetic to other people, and that Simon does not do drugs. Then, it is revealed that Superhoodie is Simon to Alisha, and she starts a relationship with him. He tells her that in the future the two of them will be together. He is able to touch Alisha due to his confidence that he's gained (and whatever other reasons that he has, it isn't completely known). Superhoodie sacrifices himself for this Simon's future, knowing that he has changed it with his death.
Simon meets another girl (why must all the girls that he seems to like have problems!) by the name of Jessica. Alisha and Nathan are both suspicious of her, and they start to follow him and Jessica around. Simon does not approve. Well, Jessica's dad has a problem with any guy she dates and attempts to kill Simon.
The next part is maybe completely inconsequential due to time rewinding by Curtis and it never actually happening, but the public finds out about these abilities. And then the public finds out about the group, dubbing them the ASBO 5. Well, everyone but Simon decides to go for the publicity and the fame. He knows that it will only be bad. Simon ends up getting kicked out of his parents’ house because his mother is a bit freaked out by his invisibility thing. He crashes with Nathan. Simon goes invisible when Alisha visits and catches that something's off. He follows her back to the deceased Superhoodie's place. Alisha lets Simon know that he was in fact Simon. Well, they go back to the hotel and the guy with Lactokinesis (ability to control dairy) basically goes insane and kills people. When Simon finds Alisha dead (after some time passing, of course), he becomes strong, stands up to fight. And gets stabbed by the guy. Curtis rewinds time and these events never happened, and are prevented.
There's a three month timeframe between this and the last episode of the season. In this time Simon starts dating Alisha (knowing that he can't touch her thanks to her ability). He starts training to become Superhoodie, and he also learns about the fact that he's Superhoodie (again - remember he learned but time was warped and adjusted). Simon is pulled from about this point, where he's training, starting to date Alisha, and is aware of who he will be in the future.
Personality: Simon is generally a shy guy who has problems communicating with others from start to finish. Obviously, making friends and meeting people does not come easily to him. Other people tend to find him odd, and other characters tease him frequently. It can be said hat he is the loner of the group of people that he talks to, and he never fully overcomes this despite coming out of his shell slightly. He is desperate to be accepted by his friends. Simon needs gain comfort with someone before this will happen, though. His shyness is clearly mirrored by his ability - Invisibility. Initially it only worked when he "felt" invisible, but he was able to get control of it. Whenever he just meets someone it takes him awhile before he'll even think about opening up. He has started to open to the friends he has. There is a darker side to this shyness when combined with his invisibility. Simon will turn invisible to watch people. He has watched the girls change, as well as sneaking into someone's house and watching her sleep. This may come from a fear of approaching people or speaking with them. He finds it easier to watch and observe them, and even better - now he can do it without others catching him.
Simon does not speak needlessly and the things that he says should be taken seriously. He will say something useful when he does speak up about a situation. He is clearly smart. When the group killed their probation worker at the beginning of the series, he is the one who comes up with a way to hide the body in a way that would keep them from getting caught. Throughout the series he comes up with the most ideas on how to solve the problems. He is able to quickly identify problems, and works to resolve them for everyone around himself. He also uses his moral integrity to become a bit of a voice of reason when things start to go wrong. Though sometimes his resolutions are not always moral. Simon is not above finger pointing and speaking up when he feels something is wrong, too. It is, perhaps, why he wants so badly to be a superhero.
Simon can be found occasionally referencing Superheroes in relation to his own life (Superman, for example). He likes science fiction and superheroes. He seems to idolize the heroes within comics and movies. This is most likely what caused him to become a voice of reason to his friends. He uses these heroes as an example of what to do with his own abilities, and how to use them correctly.
Simon is someone who treasures his friendships, and he loves to keep record of his experiences. He is found filming everything throughout the series. He has videos of many of their conversations and photos of a lot of the events in his life (good for him - it helps him later on!). He will commit crimes to keep people around himself safe, and to keep his friends safe and out of trouble. He cares deeply about his friends, the other "Misfits", and has killed for them. They did start to bring him out of his shell, and Superhoodie is proof that he will some day have the confidence. He says that those days were the best days of his lives. He has a compassionate sense about him, and even people he feels have not always done right to him, he will stick his neck out for to save.
Despite that he treasures friendships, he struggles quite a lot with other people, and his social skills were quite better online. He enjoys sites like YouTube, Facebook, and other social networking sites. He socializes easily online, and can seem to come out of his shell. He struggles a lot to bring that to his interactions in person. Even when he starts to gain confidence at the end of season two.
Superhoodie is Simon in the future, and while it may seem irrelevant - it definitely is because of Simon's awareness of this. He is a far more confident version of himself and a true-blue Superhero. Now, while this is not what the current Simon is. It shows a lot of what this group of people and the experiences have done for him and made him into. He is quite strong, confident, and smart. He is an extremely effective and clever superhero. This is the sort of potential that this Simon has within himself. Simon is from a canon point where he is working hard to become this person, and is not exactly successful yet, but he knows it is within his capabilities now. I think him knowing has started to make him more confident, and has reassured him that he can be like one of the heroes that he idolizes. When he starts to date Alisha he also has gained confidence, and by the others deciding that he's worth something. Though I should say that he gets blown off still quite a lot.
Contrary to most of what was said earlier, Simon has an explosive and dangerous temperament. He has certain buttons that will set him off. A former friend invited "him" and when Simon found out it was meant for another Simon, he went and started to set fire to the boy's house. What stopped him and broke that bit of rage was a cat, he said that the cat did him no harm and so he ended up putting the fire out. He got caught and the punishment was the community service that he is in from the start of the series. Also, Sally found out about the first probation worker that they had killed. She upset Simon enough that he killed her to protect them, and even states that he did it to protect them. He will always have an explosive temperament, and will always have buttons that can be hit. But even offending him slightly won't set him off; it would take some work to get him to that point. Other: Simon likes social networking, video editing, superheroes (he is *very* fond of Superman), American Science Fiction shows, British Science fiction shows. He brushes his hair to the side when he's nervous, blinks a lot, and tends to stare. He's also a terrible dancer. Just about any bad dancing that you've seen a stereotypical nerd do - he does. First Person (entry type): It is getting close to Christmas; it is only a month away. I can't believe how long it's been. Made a new video, but everyone's been so busy. I don't know if they'd want to see it...or if Nathan'd just call me a wanker for caring...
I can't believe I'm him...there has to be some rule about telling someone their future. Won't that mess up the time-space continuum? So far, so good, but I'm very worried that it could get worse. You never know. Alisha shouldn't have told me everything, probably. I'm not even sure why she did. It doesn't make me feel better about anything. I'm never going to be as good as he is at anything. …The training isn't going so well. I keep wanting to give up, but I know that I can't. If I give up, maybe everyone will stop liking me all over again.
Third Person: He reached to touch his toes and stretched out his muscles. He made sure his legs felt loose enough and his muscles were relaxed enough that he wouldn't hurt himself while he was sprinting. Simon stood up straight and stared at the edge of the roof. "One hundred meters," he told himself. He brushed his hair do the side and started off quickly. He wasn't particularly fast, though, and as his feet met the edge of the roof, he jumped, but didn't quite make it to the side, and fell landing in a garbage can. Cardboard boxes and Styrofoam broke his fall, but he was in quite a lot of pain.
His body resisted moving and he decided to just lay there for a few minutes and let his body take a break. He finally shifted himself out of the garbage, struggling to get out and he stared at the ground. He eyed his arms where he was already aching, and knew there would be bruises. He groaned a little bit, "Well, that was terrible." He diverted his eyes up towards the roof of the building and decided to give it one more go. He knew that he would get some looks walking around with bruises on his face and arms (and the rest of his body, but no one would see those), but he had to do it.
"One more time and I'll do it." And he knew didn't have a choice if he wanted to be a superhero.
I still really don’t want to go by “The Invisible Cunt”. I wish Nathan would stop calling me that. There’s nothing nice about that. That would be like calling Superman “Superwanker” instead. Not that I think Superman’s a wanker… not that I think I’m like Superman. He’s actually a hero.
Batman didn’t happen over night, though. It takes a lot of work. Can’t just have a superpower and expect to be a hero, either. I guess it takes work - a lot of work or maybe everyone would do it. Bumps and bruises prove that, I guess. I think that’s the reason that people are given powers, because they want to be a hero. Probably need to think about getting a job soon.
I want to go out for drinks tonight. Anyone want to join me? We can relax a bit, I guess. And not go falling off any rooftops.
