The New X-Men were formed of the strongest mutant students remaining after M-Day. But life wasn’t simple for the students. First they had to send home a band of students who’d lost the mutant gene and were made human. They snuck them out quietly and put them on a bus. Before the bus had gone a foot, though, a new band of Anti-Mutant resistance people called the Purifiers bombed the bus and killed the students.

The deaths devastated the students. But the New X-Men was formed by Emma Frost to be the strongest of mutants from the school. She had originally attempted to drive Laura out of the school, knowing she had killed several hundred people, but Cyclops didn’t allow her to and made her put Laura on the new team.

The new team had so many problems to deal with on their own. The first was the Purifiers, led by Reverend William Stryker, storming the institute and mercilessly slaughtering the students. The students fought back, Stryker having killed and hurt so many of their friends, and Elixir ended up being the one to kill Stryker.

From there was Nimrod. A robot even the X-Men couldn’t defeat before that had been revived by Stryker. Without Stryker Nimrod sought Forge out to be rebuilt. But no one listened to the kids when they tried to tell them Nimrod lived and instead left the country for Storm’s wedding. The kids were forced to fight Nimrod, and together defeat him by overloading his time mechanism. To do this X-23 had to cut Nimrod open, and she took a direct attack that nearly killed her.

Julian saved Laura, flying her home faster than he’d ever gone when Emma Frost opened his telepathic powers entirely. He took her back to the Institute where Elixir helped revive her. From then on Laura became obsessed with Julian. She didn’t realize, but she had started to like him.

Cessily, aka Mercury, could see this and took Laura out for coffee to talk about it. But the Facility had turned up with Kimura and blew the coffee house up. Instead of taking Laura, though, they took Cess. Laura went back to get her things, and then left with Julian to track the Facility down and save Cess. Julian saw a side of Laura he never knew existed, and it scared him to see her let go, and he constantly had to keep her from murdering people.

Eventually they found Cess, who’s skin had been used to create Predator X, a beast with metal skin that couldn’t be killed and hungered for mutants. Surge, having heard her team was in trouble, led the New X-Men to the Facility, where other X-Men joined them in destroying two of the three Predators and most of the Facility.

However Kimura got away and again tried to kill Laura with a sniper from far off. However Frost intervened and took all of Kimura’s few happy memories and left her with an empty hole in her heart. Frost then gave her the order to kill those of the Facility she could and left the broken woman
