- Dean witnesses first hand the dangerous abilities his brother may later possess. Another young man named Max is connected to a case Dean and Sam end up working on. The outcome of the murders points to Max being behind the deaths. Upon being discovered, Max turns on Dean. Sam is able to stop Max before it’s too late, but the fact that Sam may one day have powers that could turn that violent is a lot for Dean to handle.
- After witnessing the unforgiving truth of the worst of humanity, Dean is forced to come to terms with the fact that while the supernatural creatures he hunts are sick- nothing will ever compare to the twisted human mind.
- While hunting what a daeva, Dean discovers from Meg, a demon that Sam met when they had gone their separate ways, that there is a plan to capture John Winchester. The plan is thwarted, of course, but after the event, John concludes that it’s better for all of them that he stays separate from Dean and Sam
- The brothers face a creature that Dean had encountered before, some time ago. In a rare act of defiance, a young Dean left Sam alone briefly in order to have a bit of fun. He returned to find Sam being attacked by this same creature- a Shtriga. With his previous experience, the brothers are able to lay a trap and destroy the Shtriga. Dean regrets using a young boy named Michael in order to succeed, though, as he says the kid has lost his innocence now that he knows what lurks in the dark.
- Dean and Sam learn about the Colt, a legendary gun that is capable of killing anything- including the demon that killed Mary Winchester, Sam’s girlfriend Jessica, and others. The Colt was taken from a family friend by a group of vampires. The gun’s legend is tested true by killing a vampire without beheading. John agrees to let the boys come with him to hunt the Yellow Eyed Demon together.
- Dean attempts to contact his father after John has gone off to make a deal with Meg. Meg answers, claiming that John is beyond saving. Dean and Sam end up at the home of Bobby, another hunter. While there, Meg attacks, but is caught under a Devil’s Trap in Bobby’s house. Dean demands that Sam exorcise the demon, despite Bobby’s warning that the damages done to the human body will kill the girl that Meg has possessed. The girl dies, but gives Dean a clue to find his father. Dean and Sam do find John, but only to realize that he has been possessed by the demon that killed their mother. Torn, they hesitate which leads to a great deal of injury to all parties. The demon is expelled from John Winchester by a shot to the leg from the legendary Colt. The three Winchesters are in transit to the hospital when they are struck by a semi truck being driven by a demon-possessed individual.
- After the accident, Dean slips into a coma and has an out of body experience. He encounters another Reaper who calls herself Tessa. She explains that the angry spirits that Dean sees so frequently are actually those of people who refuse to move on. Dean never gets a chance to decide whether to move on or not, as his father makes a deal with the Yellow Eyed Demon and trades his own life for his son’s. Dean is returned to his body, completely forgetting the entire encounter.
- Dean meets Ellen and Jo Harvelle
- Dean admits that the world isn’t as black and white as he wants it to be after meeting with a hunter named Gordon who reveals that he killed his own sister after she was turned into a vampire.
- Dean reveals to his brother that his father told him that if Sam were ever to become evil, that it was his job to kill him.
- Dean is duped by a demon possessing the body of his brother Sam. The encounter forces Dean to realize that he doesn’t have it in him to kill his brother, even when it means his own survival.
- Dean goes to prison! But on purpose. Still, he fits in remarkably well.
