- Dean is tricked by a Crocotta into believing that his father is calling him from the spirit world. Despite Sam’s warnings, Dean cannot help but hope that it is actually his father trying to help him and falls for the creature’s tricks.
- Sam reaches for a last ditch effort to save Dean by trying to master the art of immortality which has been utilized by a man known as Doc Benton. Dean balks at the idea and convinces Sam that it isn’t the way to solve anything. Bela returns and reveals that she is also contracted by a crossroads demon. Her contract is held by the same demon that holds Dean’s contract- Lilith. Bela tells them that Lilith is the one who wants Sam dead and that she hopes they will be able to kill her first.
- Dean begins to hallucinate in his last hours, but the boys attempt to track down Lilith regardless. Both Dean and Sam fight valiantly, but in the end, Lilith releases hellhounds and they tear Dean apart, casting his soul into Hell while his brother watches, helplessly.
- In Hell, Dean is subjected to what feels like 30 years of constant torture by a demon named Alistair. Each day, he is told that the torture will stop if he comes off the rack and chooses to torture souls instead. For 30 years, Dean refuses, but he eventually gives in. He puts souls on the rack for 10 years and learns how to torture them from Alistair.
- In reality, only 4 months passes. After those 4 months, Dean is yanked from Hell and placed back in his body. Unfortunately, that body happens to be buried in a grave. He digs his way out and makes his way back to civilization, stopping at a gas station for water, food, and other provisions. [This is Dean’s entrance point.]

Personality: Outwardly, Dean can come off as a brash, bullheaded, sexist jerk. He mocks people, makes snap decisions, and is more stubborn than a mule. His actions paint, to the casual observer, a clear image of a man who sees it as his way or the highway. He's one of those types that is just sort of used to getting what he wants by either smooth talking or just flat out taking. Not being a fan of being told what to do, Dean takes charge of many situations, making snap decisions in order to get the job done.

But to stop at the surface level of Dean wouldn't really do him any justice. Dean's hardened exterior has a lot to do with the life that he's lived and the things that he's seen. His childhood was anything but typical, and sculpted his outlook on life to be just as unique. Because of all the things that he can’t share with anyone but those that he trusts with absolute certainty, Dean keeps a great deal of his inner thoughts to himself- especially if he believes those around him are better off for not knowing.

Dean's family is a big part of why he acts the way he does. It’s instilled in him that family is everything, that family will always be a constant, and that he has to do everything in his power to keep the most important people in his life as safe as possible. Time and time again, he throws himself in front of danger in order to take the blow so that his father and brother don’t have to. He demonstrates this most poignantly in the series when he makes a deal with a crossroads demon- offering his soul in a year’s time in return for his brother to be brought back to life. All of this probably has a great deal to do with the fact that he was too young to be able to stop the demon Azazel from killing his mother. The traumatic event caused a tremor of loss, which in turn created a need to hold on tightly to those who are closest to him.
