Dean also manages to use harsh humor as a way of deflecting his true feelings. A master of wit and sarcasm, and the ever impressive art of the scoff, this is not to claim that Dean is not sometimes 100% serious when he uses crude humor or sarcasm. He is, to put it bluntly, a collection of the most offensive traits a man could possess at times. Inappropriate jokes have never come easier to a person than they do to Dean Winchester. Many times, it’s clear that he enjoys the shock value of his words, enjoying the way that he can get a rise out of people by being wildly obscene. In other instances, one has to wonder if he’s merely using the crude behavior as a way to avoid speaking plainly and honestly about less than pleasant feelings. He manages a healthy use of honest mocking and purposeful outlandish statements, and masters the use of them so fluidly that it is difficult at times to know what his true intent is with the humor.

However, Dean has many positive traits as well. He’s not all rough edges and cold shoulder. When he wants to, Dean can be downright charming. Usually, he uses a witty line or a brilliant smile to get around some obstacle (whether it is to successfully seduce a woman or to convince someone of a lie he's spinning). Due to his line of work, and the nature of not being able to form many lasting relationships with others, we rarely see Dean use his powers of charm for much else but a leg up. The fact that the ability exists, though, proves that Dean knows what people want to hear. He may not always be in the mood to cater to such desires, but he knows how to read people, if he’s willing to take the time.

Respect for authority is a mixed bag for Dean. He was raised by a Marine, a father he came to know as Sir nearly as often as he knew him as Dad. A clear hierarchy was established in the Winchester household once Dean’s mother died, and it’s very possible that it was this strict upbringing that helped to keep Dean and Sam alive while out of the road at such a young age. Regardless, while Sam balked at his father’s authority, Dean grew up with a strong respect for the methods that his father implemented, and respected the hell out of the man well into legal adulthood. His respect for authority seems to be circumstantial as a means for his own survival, though, as the local police, and even federal officials are something of a joke to Dean. He is well aware of how much they don’t know and does his damndest to keep them out of his business. However, when it comes to other hunters, Dean recognizes the authority of some people who have been in the business longer than he has- and therefore know more than he does, in many cases. Bobby Singer, for instance, acts as a second father to Dean and Sam, and while Dean may not always agree with Bobby’s opinion on matters, he respects the hell out of the man. Respect and blind faith are nothing close to the same, and it is in Dean’s interactions with Bobby and other older hunters like him that we can see the plain difference.

A person is not comprised of their interests and favorites, but to describe Dean Winchester without bringing up his taste in music, cars, and food would do his a disservice. To look at a list of Dean’s favorite things, one could not possibly mistake him as anything but an American boy, born and bred. Dean’s car is an extension of him, a show of his pride and all the things about himself that he wants to project to the world. He is classic, just like his car, just like his rock. There is a timeless manliness that he is constantly striving to portray. His love of fast food and diner food may be a learned adoration, as that is most (if not all) of what his diet consists of at any given time. To lay it out in simplest terms, though, Dean is a man who drives a Mustang, listens to classic rock, and eats cheeseburgers and apple pie. The fact that his travels take him through the heart of small town America only further highlight just how customary his interests are for the archetype of the American man.
