Character Notes: History: We’re first introduced to Karkat as a chat troll who pesters the kids, mostly Jade and John, verbally abusing them because of what they had (in his perspective) or would (in their perspective) do. Timelines are really screwed up in Homestuck. Through the magic of Trollian, the chat client the trolls use, Karkat can effectively troll backwards through the kids’ timeline, so that every successive conversation he has with John happens earlier and earlier in John’s life. It’s pretty confusing for John and extremely frustrating for Karkat, but Karkat is nothing if not stubborn, and refuses to stop. Also, Karkat sucks at trolling.
ANYWAY. Karkat is the leader of a group of twelve trolls total who played a game called SGRUB. They thought they were just playing a game, but really they were restoring the balance of light and dark in the universe and creating their own universe over which they were to rule as gods. BUUUUUUUUT that didn’t work out because of the Scratch, a rift which disrupted pretty much everything and took away the trolls’ chance at their ultimate reward.
This pissed them off ROYALLY. Well, mostly just Karkat because everything pisses off Karkat, and when they relocated to their secret awesome meteor base and started watching over the planet they had created, they discovered the ones responsible for the Scratch. It was the Homestuck kids; John, Jade, Dave, and Rose. Karkat immediately ordered his group of friends to troll the kids as RETRIBUTION for what they had done. Instead they ended up being a sort of set of guides for the kids on their misadventures through the same game the trolls themselves had played.
BUT the kids’ game was DOOMED because of various shenanigans that Karkat blamed on Jade and John but were really Vriska’s fault. In any case, Karkat does his best to guide the kids in a way that will hopefully avoid future problems, but Karkat’s rambling insults and backwards trolling really only confuse matters. He does manage to explain the situation pretty clearly to John, but since he is trolling backwards, John doesn’t really get the information he needs when he needs it. Also John is a derp, but we’ll save that for John’s app.
Personality: Karkat is impatient, crabby, rude, and constantly insulting. He is reluctant to admit his personal emotions… except when they’re negative, which seems to be all the time. He raaaaages. He becomes frustrated very easily, and even his most sincere advice often is presented as insults.
Over time, however, it’s revealed that he really does care about his friends, even if he’d never admit it. He seems to genuinely want to help out when people come to him for advice in their extremely complicated troll romances, and everything he does is out of an effort to make sure things turn out right for everyone. He is honestly and truly broken up over the deaths of several friends throughout the story, and often blames himself when things go wrong.
This does not stop him from blaming others when he thinks something’s their fault, though. His first interactions with Jade and John are particularly rude and insulting because he believes it’s their fault for all the problems that the kids and trolls have and will encounter over time. He does his best to reason with them over certain decisions he thinks were badly made, but Karkat’s version of reasoning is pretty much just insulting a person in the hopes that they’ll get so ashamed that they’ll just do what he says.
As the kind of sort of self-appointed leader (he claimed to be leader but was also sort of made leader by circumstances he wasn’t aware of), Karkat expects everyone to follow his orders without question, but considering he’s leading a bunch of trolls, it usually doesn’t happen without huge amounts of bickering and mutual insulting. Of all the trolls though, Karkat seems to be able to herd the group the best, despite the overwhelming clash of personalities that occurs on a regular basis. Karkat could be called ambitious, but really he just likes being in a position of authority so he can order people around and have an excuse for doing so.
When shit really hits the fan, though, Karkat tends to be hesitant to act, because really despite all his boasting and bragging and constant insulting, he’s kind of a crybaby. He balks at the sight of blood, freaks out when things go wrong, and when things get really bad, like mass-amounts-of-murder-bad, he goes into a blue screen of death and then flips out later.
OH he also has issues with relationships. He claims to hate everyone equally, but then he realizes that this really doesn’t work because… and this is me trying to explain without going too in depth with the extremely complicated trollmance business… but every troll needs an ultimate rival, kind of a rival soul mate, and Karkat hates everyone so he feels he’s set his standards too high for that special someone. For a while he thinks John is that person, then gives up because John just doesn’t get it, and then he goes and starts hating on his past and future selves in the Trollian memo boards. It’s pretty messed up. He also has trouble admitting his true feelings about people like Terezi, with whom he shares a growing mutual attraction. If Karkat had a Troll Facebook, his relationship status would be set to “it’s complicated.” But only if he was being honest with himself.
Third Person: Karkat was slamming his face into his keyboard. Repeatedly. John, that stupid piece of bulge shit was doing something idiotic with stuffed animals and salamanders. Seriously. What the fuck was he thinking. There was important shit to be done and he was standing there going on about some stupid human named Nic Cage and some idiotic movie that had absolutely nothing to do with anything.
Karkat really couldn’t slam his face into the keyboard enough. This was so stupid. Here he was, trying to help the poor bastard and then he goes and does something like this. Really the stupid douche was beyond hope, but it wasn’t like anyone had any fucking choice in the matter. This idiotic fuckface was the leader of the team of asshat humans, and they were the ones in the game. They were the only ones who could actually do anything, and all Karkat could do was watch. And slam his head against the keyboard.
We're sorry, but this application has been rejected. We feel that while you have the character down in terms of understanding him, you don't show an accurate enough character voice-- a big part of Karkat is his frequent out-there, creative insults and turns of phrase, which we feel you don't show enough of here. Please feel free to reapply!
