2/5 SPOILER WARNING

[personal profile] trinities 2011-03-17 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Character Notes:
History: Homura is a transfer student at Mitakihara middle school. She's been in the hospital recovering from a heart disease, so is generally shy and nervous, having been out of school for so long. Failing to solve problems at the board because of the break in her education and fainting in gym class make her feel even more worthless-- and a prime target for a witch, beings who spread despair and sadness. She's saved from the witch by Madoka, who she met in school, and her teammate Mami-- both Puella Magi, or magical girls. She doesn't become one herself just yet-- not until Walpurgis Night, the arrival of a powerful witch who kills Madoka, her first and only friend.

Kyuubey, the girls' animal familiar, offers to contract Homura to become a magical girl as well-- a contract that involves her fighting witches in exchange for one wish. She wishes to redo meeting Madoka, except as a girl who can protect her.

She's again just getting out of the hospital, and again transferring into Mitakihara. Except this time she seems a little less shy and nervous-- she's done this before, after all. And then she... runs up to Madoka and tells her that she fights the witches too!! Yeah, Homura is not very smooth just yet. It all works out, though, with Mami and Madoka helping her learn how to use her new powers, which include the ability to stop time. It stops working out right around Walpurgis Night; Madoka doesn't die, but her overuse of power turns her soul gem into a grief seed and she becomes a witch.

Oh, didn't I mention that magical girls eventually become witches? Fair's fair; the girls didn't know either.

Homura turns back time again, and on this round, she tells the other magical girls (Sayaka included this time) about how Kyuubey didn't tell them the whole truth. They don't react well, thinking she's trying to sow dissent among them along with newcomer Kyoko. When Sayaka turns into a witch, however, they see the truth; Mami breaks down and kills Kyoko, saying that it would be better to just die now than become a witch. Madoka has to kill her in order to stop her killing Homura and herself, and Madoka and Homura face Walpurgis Night alone. Their overexertion sends them both along the path to witchhood, but Madoka cleans Homura's soul gem, asking her to please kill her before she becomes a witch, and crying, she does. Homura resolves to prevent Madoka from ever becoming a magical girl in the first place, at the other girl's request.

3/5 SPOILER WARNING

[personal profile] trinities 2011-03-17 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Fourth time. Homura's become pretty damn jaded and down by now; she heals her eyes to get rid of her glasses and unbraids her hair, transforming her image from a cute shy girl into a stoic one. She warns Madoka away from becoming a magical girl early, but come Walpurgis Night, when she's the only magical girl around to defeat the witch, Madoka contracts with Kyuubey to save her. (This is where the anime itself opens; the fight is shown as what seems to be a dream sequence of Madoka's.) Madoka defeats the witch in one go, then becomes a witch herself; it's back to the beginning for Homura.

The fifth cycle is what the anime covers. Homura gives Madoka a vague warning at school to stay the way she is, and attempts to kill Kyuubey, even though she knows he has many bodies, to prevent him from contracting Madoka; this backfires, when Madoka finds the injured Kyuubey. Mami tells Homura to leave; she does.

Although Mami is antagonistic towards Homura, she is still willing to help her out as a fellow magical girl, and hopes they can one day come to a truce; she offers her a grief seed, needed to clean her soul gem, but Homura constantly rejects her advances. Later, when Kyoko comes to town, Homura allies with her to stop Madoka from becoming a magical girl; Kyoko seems confused at her real goal and methods, though, so it's likely she didn't tell her the whole story.

At this point in the anime, with two episodes left to air, Sayaka has become a witch and died; Kyoko died to kill her. Mami has been out of the picture since early episodes, and without Madoka as a magical girl, Homura is going to have to face Walpurgis Night alone. That's fine by her; as long as Madoka is safe, she doesn't care about anything else.

(There are tiny details that suggest there may have been more than five cycles; for the purpose of playing her I'll take the cycles at face value, unless I get disproved down the line.)

Personality: The fact that Homura's time looping wasn't explained until late means that through most of the series, she seems cold, antagonistic, and stoic. She showed up whenever Madoka got near a fight; since there's competition among magical girls for the grief seeds dropped by witches, Mami thought she was simply trying to edge out the competition, greedily killing witches herself for their grief seeds. She never tries to explain herself and doesn't appear to care what the other girls think of her, leaving the viewer with the impression that she's a mysterious enemy with unknown goals.

The time looping explains quite a bit, though. At first she was a shy and nervous girl; she had been out of school as an invalid for so long that she felt worthless, like she couldn't do anything right. When she learned about Puella Magi, she thought it was amazing, magical powers that could save the world and make life better. In short, once she got rid of her initial shyness, she was a lot like Madoka-- idealistic, but down on herself, a girl who gets strength from those around her.

4/5 SPOILERS

[personal profile] trinities 2011-03-17 12:46 am (UTC)(link)

It seems like she didn't have many friends even as a child; she refers to Madoka as her first friend. And her attachment to Madoka is what drives her. Homura is a devoted person, if she has something to devote herself to, and that something is Madoka. She will live through the same events as many times as it takes to save her friend; no matter how cynical and stoic the cycles make her, no matter how cold she becomes, she never loses that devotion that spurred her on in the first place. And her old self is still under there-- she's stoic as Sayaka loses her soul gem and the girls discover it's literally her soul, efficiently running to get it and bring it back, but she still gets that frantic, urgent tone in her voice in episode nine, begging Madoka not to become a magical girl. It seems that she's lost her faith in working with the other girls after so many timelines in which they as a group failed; although she'll help the other girls if she can or if she needs to, her goal is to save Madoka.

And so her stoic nature is explained – after so many cycles, she's toughened up and lost some faith. The fact that she won't explain anything – she tried that in another cycle, and it failed. Her snatching up witches and grief seeds greedily – actually an effort to save Madoka. After all, if she can do it herself, if she can defeat all the witches all on her own, there won't be any need for Madoka to become a magical girl.

Other: The fact that she's unable to even do gym class warmups in the first round isn't brought up again; either she's lived through so much time that she's recovered from her illness, or, more likely, she healed her heart with magic like she healed her eyes.

Her magical weapon is a targe; it allows her to stop or reverse time, and also allows her to store more mundane weapons. Like grenades, and AK-47s. Yeah, she raided a Yakuza warehouse in one cycle.

If accepted, I plan to play her from the very first cycle, which means she'll be a walking spoiler, so I'll cut all her entries for now.

First Person (entry type):

[first cycle]
Tomorrow's the first day of school. I've been studying from books in the hospital, but...

I'm not very good at studying. What if the teacher calls on me, and I don't know the answer? I'm not lazy, but he'll think I am, and then everyone will laugh. I don't want a reputation for being lazy or stupid... but since I'm not very smart, either, I don't want a reputation for being smart. I'm bound to let people down.

And I'm not very good at making friends, either. I don't know what's stylish right now, or what shows everyone likes... and thinking about standing in front of the class and introducing myself, I just don't know what to do. I don't have any interesting hobbies or skills to talk about, and no one wants to hear that I was sick. So... there's really nothing special about me at all.

Third Person:

[current cycle]
She watched Madoka through the girl's window.

It was becoming habit; to intercept Kyubey before he could reach Madoka on the 17th. Three witches, give or take, and then it was her first day of school. She'd confront Madoka on the first day; tell her what not to become. Half a week later-- Mami. Sometimes she could save her. Sometimes, she couldn't. Next week, Sayaka. Sometimes she contracted. Sometimes she didn't. Kyoko was her own wild card.

Madoka... Madoka was the only one she could never save. If she contracted, she would die or become a witch. Every single time, over and over, her best and only friend would die, and no matter how hard she tried--

She clenched her fist. Not this time. Not this time.

Her other hand held one of Kyubey's many corpses. After all this time, she still wasn't sure exactly what he was made of; something red that didn't bleed was visible through the holes. But that wasn't important. Nothing that wouldn't help her save Madoka was important.

Not any more.

PENDING - second sample

Can we get another first person sample from the current cycle, please?

[identity profile] dreamoflight.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I never expected Kyoko to die.

She's never done that before-- she's been a wild card, an intruder, sometimes an ally. But she's never been a martyr. If Madoka had been contracted, then us together...

But that's not an option. Magical girls die; that's what you have to learn. Magical girls die, and I won't turn time back for that; because what if this is the time? The time that Madoka comes out of Walpurgis alive. I can't stop for Mami or Sayaka or Kyoko. Madoka is too important for that.

I can't stop for myself, either. While there's still danger to Madoka, I have to keep myself alive - but if my death will save her, then so be it.

This is my burden to bear, and mine alone.
