First Person (entry type): The darkness through Middle Earth appears to be spreading. Those of us who venture past the borders of the Golden Wood find we have less distance to travel to find news of some fell influence corrupting the land. Soon, I fear, even we will find ourselves forced to confront the shadows that seemingly hold no regard for the conflicts and allegiances of the common races.
If this is to be the fate of the Age of Men, I am forced to wonder why we remain. I would not, of course, relinquish lightly the only home I have even known nor would I go against the wishes of my Lord and Lady. But it cannot be much longer that we Elves can remain a presence now that the current Age is so firmly established and I would prefer that we did not end our time on Middle Earth forced to flee under such dark circumstances.
Third Person: The solitary Elf couldn't help but heave a relieved sigh as he laid eyes on the Golden Woods of Lothlorien. Much as Haldir had never minded the scouting missions that took him to other parts of Middle Earth, the spread of shadow and fell creatures that seemed to grow every time he ventured on such a mission meant he was never happier than when he returned to the woods he had always known as home. Indeed, he was not certain that it would not soon become necessary for scouting missions to be carried out in groups, if only because said missions seemed to carry more and more risk.
But of course, that would entail an even thinner border patrol than existed now. Which was the other reason Haldir was so glad to return home: while he was always happy to carry out any orders given to him, his ties to his home meant he was always happier when he was available to protect those he resided with. And of course, although he would never be one to admit it, being able to reassure himself that no misfortune had befallen his brothers was something he would always be grateful for.
As he crossed the border into Lothlorien, Haldir instinctively glanced upwards. Sure enough, eyes were already fixed on him as his fellow guardians of the woods confirmed that he was not an enemy. He made his way towards the flet he shared with his brothers, planning to rest awhile before he continued to Caras Galadhon and reported his findings to Lady Galadriel and Lord Celeborn.
