Character Notes:

History: (Note: This is a revised version of my original application, with only a few minor changes to the personality section.)

Envy is one of seven Homunculi (artificial humans) created by the main villain of the series known as “the Father”. It's not clear when Envy was created, but like his brethren, he's lived for quite a few centuries. He was the instigator of the Ishvalan War of Extermination, and having taken the form of an Amertrian solider, he shot an Ishvalan child, thus sparking the conflict which would result in the deaths of hundreds, if not thousands of people (including Scar's brother and Winry's parents).

He first encountered Edand Al at the 5th Laboratory (accompanied by Lust), after the Elric Brothers learn about the process by which Philosopher's Stones can be created and stumbled upon the alchemical circle used to produce them. It is at this point that the Elric Brothers learn of the existence of Homunculi, though they are unaware of Envy's shape-shifting abilities, since he kept his powers in check during the confrontation.

Envy acts as a spy and assassin for the Father, often using his unique shape-shifting abilities to disguise himself as military officials in order to attain sensitive information. As such, when he learned that Maes Hughes had figured out the Father's plans and intended to warn Roy Mustang, he disguised himself as Maria Ross in order to ascertain how much Hughes knew. He then impersonated Huges' wife and promptly executed Hughes. This set into motion a chain of events which led to the real Maria Ross being falsely blamed for Hughes' murder and her subsequent “execution” by Roy Mustang. In truth, Mustang helped to fake her death and then sent her out of the country.

Once the Elric Brothers learn that King Bradley is actually a Homunculus, Envy and Gluttony are sent out to capture them and take them into custody. During the course of the battle, Edward, Ling, and Envy are swallowed by Gluttony and end up inside a pocket dimension without any means of escape. It is here that Envy reveals his true form—that of a gigantic green behemoth—and attacks. It is only when Edward says that he can free them from Gluttony's stomach that Envy grudgingly agrees not to harm him. In exchange, he promises to tell Edward what the meaning of a “sacrifice” is... but of course as soon as Envy is freed, he admits that he lied. Regardless, Edward gets some of his questions answered by the Father... and Ling ends up becoming the vessel for the soul of the Homunculus named Greed. After Edward has been informed of his rather precarious situation as a “potential sacrifice,” Envy tells him that should he attempt to interfere with the Father's plans, they will kill his friend, Winry Rockbell.

As the Father's new watchdog, Envy is the one sent to retrieve Dr. Marcoh as he attempts to flee north, but he is subdued by the combined efforts of Scar, May Chang, and Dr. Marcoh. He is reduced to a weakened state and is entrusted to May Chang so that she might learn the secret of immortality, thus saving her clan. He spends the six months that comprise the timeskip stuck inside a mason jar and being cared for by May Chang. But he tricks May Chang into returning him to Central, which she manages to do during the Promised Day—the day upon which the Father will implement his grand scheme. It is on that day that Envy is able to regain his “default” human form once more. He then escapes from May Chang's clutches and seeks to prevent Edward and his allies from putting a stop to the Father's plans.

Envy meets his end during his confrontation with Roy Mustang, but he doesn't die at the colonel's hands. Edward—having realized that, in truth, Envy was jealous of humans and their ability to overcome impossible odds—takes pity on the poor broken creature. Humiliated beyond belief that a lowly human would take pity on a Homunculus, Envy commits suicide by tearing out the Philosopher's Stone which serves as his core, thus permanently ending his own existence.

Personality: He is known as Envy the Vainglorious. As his name implies, Envy is the personification of that Deadly Sin. He represents the Father's envy and jealousy of humans, and as such goes to great lengths to advertise just how great his own attributes are, while demeaning others. He takes the form of an androgynous youth and is extremely sensitive about his physical appearance. He reacts to the word “ugly” in much the same way Edward reacts to being called “short”. In fact, he hates to be insulted, by anyone, about anything, and his temper is even shorter than Edward's.

Envy feels a very strong attachment to his Father and fellow Homunculi “siblings.” He was the fourth Homunculus to be born, thus making him the middle child, and he does appear to suffer from “middle child syndrome”. He detests being ordered around by his eldest brother, Pride, and seems particularly antagonistic toward Greed, who was born right before him. This could be due in part because the Deadly Sins they embody are so similar to one another, but it's likely that he resents Greed for “abandoning” his Homunculi family in favor of humans and chimera. Envy is shown to be particularly close to Lust and Gluttony, as she takes on the role of older sister quite readily for those two.

Out of all the Homunculi, Envy seems the most preoccupied with proving himself to Father. This could be because Envy is naturally driven to prove himself better than everyone else, including his other siblings, or because he genuinely feels a greater affection toward his creator moreso than the other Homunculi. When Hohenheim finally confronts the Father face to face, he comments on the fact that the Father—who had once scoffed at humans and their need to create families and communities—should choose to create offspring of his own. Envy is the result of the Father's jealousy and envy toward humans and their ability to create bonds with one another.

Like the Father and Pride, Envy views humans as far beneath his notice; bugs or worms that crawl and squirm about for his own amusement. He delights in human suffering, and is content to watch them slaughter each other in senseless wars, laughing all the while. In fact, he's a bit of a sadist himself and enjoys inflicting pain on others, both physical and psychological. During the fight with Ed and Ling in episode 24, Envy casually admits that he often takes the form of a victim's loved one, and then proceeds to murder his victim just to see the look of shock and disbelief on their face when their “loved one” stabs them in the heart—literally. In episode 53, he takes the form of both Hughes and his wife in order to psychologically unbalance Mustang, who has learned of Envy's involvement in Hughes' death.

Unfortunately, that plan backfired, and only served to further fuel Mustang's rage against Envy. Mustang cruelly and brutally burned Envy's body over and over again until the Homunculus was once more reduced to his weakened parasitic form. For the first time in his entire existence, Envy knows what it means to fear for his life. Slowly being crushed to death beneath Mustang's boot heel, Envy begs for his life, but Ed intervenes on Envy's behalf and pleads for Mustang to show him mercy only because he doesn't want to see Mustang give in to hatred.

Despite his sadistic and callous behavior, Envy secretly harbors a deep resentment toward humanity and their ability to constantly improve themselves. He doesn't understand acts of selfless sacrifice and considers kindness and mercy in any form to be signs of weakness. While he laughs at the way humans try to defy their self-serving nature and live honestly, he is chagrined to see the lengths at which humans will go to protect their loved ones or to stand up for their ideals. Even though Ed rescued him from Mustang's clutches, Envy still attempts to goad the others into fighting each other, not just to punish them for humiliating them, but to satisfy his own desire for schadenfreude.

When the others refuse to give in to their feelings of hatred, Envy is at a complete loss. It is then that Ed comes to realize the meaning behind Envy's name. He tells the Homunculus: “Envy... You're... jealous of humans. Humans are supposed to be so much weaker than you Homunculi, and yet even when we're beaten down, and get discouraged, or seem like we're about to go astray and fall, we still stand up to the challenge, again and again. Those who are around us pick us back up. And... you're envious of humans like that.”

Until Edward actually spoke those words out loud, Envy was unaware of the jealousy he secretly harbored against humans during all these centuries. He is unable to accept that a human—one who by all rights should hate him with a passion—should take pity on him. That a Homunculus—a creature created to be better than humans in every way—should actually be envious of their lowly lot in life is just too much for him to bear. Rather than accept that knowledge and live in humiliation of being bested by a human, both in a physical sense and in an emotional sense, Envy chose to end his own life. His pride won't allow himself to be killed by the hands of a filthy human, and is seems as though the only reason he kills himself is to spite Ed and his “flowery words and sentiments.”

As his body disintegrates, Envy looks up to Edwith tears in his eyes. The first, and only human, to have ever taken pity on him was also the only human who could truly understand his pain...

Other: As a Homunculus, Envy possesses the ability to regenerate any wound almost instantaneously. While this may make them near immortal, a Homunculus can be killed, as their healing factor can only be used so long as there are still souls remaining within the Philosopher's Stone that serves as the source of their life force and powers. If the stone should be depleted, the Homunculus dies.

Aside from regenerative capabilities, all Homunculi are both faster and stronger than their human counterparts. Compared to the other Homunculi, Envy is definitely more of the agile martial artist type, preferring to go in with his fists (or claws) and attack his opponents using hit-and-run tactics. He can shape-shift individual parts of his body, as demonstrated in episode 24 when he transformed his right arm into a snake and his left arm into a sword, which indicates he can replicate inorganic material, as well as clothing and other worn items. His disguises aren't limited to people—he can transform into various animals, too.

That being said, Envy's disguises are not flawless. It's implied that he can only replicate what he's able to see, so if someone bears a scar that they normally keep hidden beneath their clothes, Envy wouldn't be able to replicate it unless he saw it first. This could explain why he neglected to replicate the mole on the right side of Maria Ross's face: he either completely forgot or didn't notice it at all.

Of course, Envy's “default” human form is by no means his “true” form. In reality, Envy's actual body is a huge, green-scaled, lizard-like creature with eight limbs and lank hair. His body is covered in carbuncles which resemble hollow-eyed, gape-mouthed faces. These are the souls of the people of Xerxes that compose his Philosopher's Stone. They constantly scream and cry in agony. Envy is exceedingly powerful in this form, able to lay waste to his opponents with surprising ease by either crushing them underfoot, slapping them about with his tail, or (in Ed's case) simply devouring them. It should be noted that his mass is condensed when he's in his “default” human form, meaning that despite looking small, he weighs the same as his “true” form. Ling noticed this during their fight by the unusually deep footprints left behind when Envy was thrown to the ground.

But even that isn't Envy's true form. His true true form is that of a small, parasitic leech-like worm. This form is revealed in episode 43 when Dr. Marcoh manages to deplete all the souls composing Envy's Philosopher Stone with a special alchemical technique. When his body disintegrates, only a small leech-thing is left behind. But he's not completely defenseless: Envy took control of Yoki's body by attaching himself to the back of the man's neck. While this allowed him full control over Yoki's motor functions, Yoki was still able to think and speak under his own power. In this state, Envy could have easily been killed, but May Chang kept him alive in order to learn the secret of immortality. He later regains his human body by absorbing several mannequin soldiers of the Immortal Legion, thus replenishing his supply of souls within his Philosopher Stone core.

While everyone uses male pronouns to refer to Envy, Word of God states that “he actually possesses an ambiguous gender”. Neither Envy himself nor anyone else knows what his true gender may be. I've conjectured that in his “default” human form, Envy is actually a neuter male, much like the mannequin soldiers of the Immortal Legion, so while he may lean more toward a masculine figure, he possesses no external genitalia or reproductive organs. In fact, all the Homunculi are sterile, hence King Bradley's (Wrath's) inability to produce offspring (Selim is not his biological son, and is actually the Homunculus, Pride).

Envy | Fullmetal Alchemist (re-app) DONE!

[identity profile] greenwithme.livejournal.com 2011-03-19 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
First Person (Voice): (Note: I got permission from Ed-mun to have Envy find the cell phone that Ed dropped inside Gluttony's belly awhile back.)

Oi! Fullmetal Pipsqueak! You should know better than to leave your toys lying around inside Gluttony's belly like that. This little thing is pretty handy, yeah? 'Course, I'd prefer a color other than red...

Is this what you've been doing in your spare time? Looks like you've made a lot of new friends lately. I think it would be a good idea if you were to introduce us. I mean, it's always nice to have new friends to play with, right?

Don't worry. I've been keeping an eye on your little mechanic girlfriend, too. She and Kimblee are getting along swimmingly, just so you know. I really hope that the three of you will learn to get along with one another!

Third Person: Prompt: Red

“What's wrong, darling?” Envy asked of the terrified officer. “You look so pale... as if all the blood has drained from your face...”

The young man continued to gape in silent horror. He did indeed look pale. From shock, yes, but it was most likely due to the razor sharp fingers piercing his gut which resulted in his ghostly pallor.

Envy grinned, his lips forming the shape of a sickle. He drove his fingers even deeper into the man's belly, giving them a bit of a twist. The young man gasped, blood spraying from his mouth. His blue eyes grew huge and round. Envy leaned closer. He could make out his reflection in the dying man's eyes: a comely lass with blond hair and a killer's grin.

“Ah... Annette...” The officer coughed, choking on the blood that was beginning to fill his throat. “Wh-Why...?”

Envy dropped the falsetto, resuming his normal tone of voice. “It's nothing personal, darling.” The young man's eyes widened even further. “Just doing my job, that's all.”

Crimson electrical currents sparked at Envy's feet, racing upward toward his head. In their wake, a lithe, androgynous teenage boy with long, greenish hair was revealed. He still wore the same killer's grin as before.

“Of course, no one ever said I couldn't have a little fun while I'm at it!”

With a quick jerk of his hand, the officer's viscera were torn from his stomach in a bloody ribbon of living flesh. A scream went up into the night. Envy laughed, reveling in the sound. It resonated with the hundreds of souls crying in agony trapped within the Philosopher's Stone at his core. The scream seemed to go on and on and on... until finally it terminated into a choked gargle as the officer fell face first to the floor and was still.

Envy raised his right hand to his face, now in the form of a scaled claw. He watched the blood flow down his fingers and bead on the tips of his claws. What a beautiful color! That red gleaming liquid when it first escapes from a wound; each droplet like a minuscule Philosopher's Stone... So beautiful! He brought his clawed fingers to his mouth and licked at the blood coating them.

They say that green is the color of envy, but the Homunculus much preferred the color of blood...
