Character Notes:

My old Character Notes section is only good for one thing: garbage! So instead I'm going to reuse the History and Personality section from when I apped her into GB. Which was ridiculously long. Also you're not getting any Additional Links because the Pretty Cure wiki is even less indicative of her character than my old app.

SO.

History:

Karen was never really an ordinary girl, born to ludicrously wealthy musician parents, but she was probably at least a well-adjusted little girl for the first few years of her life, until one day (she looks about three or four to me in the flashback) her parents went to perform in a foreign country, leaving her behind in the care of their butler Sakamoto ("Jiiya"). Not wanting to cause trouble for her parents by making them feel like they needed to come home, she lied to them in a phone conversation, claiming she was fine without them. Encouraged, they stayed away for long periods, until by the time Karen was in middle school, they were away year-round, only coming home to visit on Christmas. Jiiya effectively acted as a father to Karen, raising her to be polite, kind, and responsible, but she still missed her real parents.

Years later, fourteen-year-old Karen Minazuki was the president of the student council and widely regarded as the smartest and prettiest girl at school, kind-hearted and helpful, but always distant. Unable to stand by and watch people struggle when there was some way she could help, she'd developed a tendency to take on extra projects to help others at her own expense. This was what Karen was like when a series of mysterious incidents occurred around the school, with people hearing loud crashes, and in one instance, part of the school library being torn up and then mysteriously repaired. Investigating with her friend Komachi, Karen discovered that a girl named Nozomi Yumehara had been at the scene every time.

When asked, Nozomi explained that... she and two of her friends were magical girls, known as Pretty Cure, who fought an evil organization called the Nightmare Group. Not only that, but after a weird explanation of how Karen was "really intelligent" and Komachi was "tranquil," the trio asked the pair to join them. Karen did what anyone would do: she got pissed off and left. So naturally, when another incident occurred, Komachi was at the scene and revealed that she'd joined them. The four-person group now set their sights on Karen again, following her home and ambushing her there, just in time to witness Karen taking a phone call from her parents, during which she once again assured them that she was just fine.

Karen had had just enough time to be confused by their attempts to prove their story when a businessman from the Nightmare Group (named Bunbee) appeared. He turned Karen's gazebo into a monster, which Karen quite sensibly ran away from while the others turned into magical girls and fought it off. Things went badly for them, though, and a large, blue, glowing butterfly (yes) fluttered over to Karen from seemingly nowhere, which a talking plush toy (it makes sense in context) told her would let her transform into Pretty Cure, too. Karen didn't really want to do this, but it was just one more instance of her having to do things for others, and with that resolved, she held out her hand, and the butterfly landed on her wrist... and then just kind of disappeared.

So, the magical girls eventually beat the monster, but the bee guy got away with the tiny plot-coupon creature, and Karen spent the next week feeling worthless and depressed and intentionally avoiding the others. Nozomi, far too stubborn and pigheaded to give up on her original pick for the fifth member of their team, continued to pester Karen, and caught her off guard with an observation: she'd picked up on how much Karen really cared about her parents. Surprised at someone actually understanding her feelings, Karen relented a bit, saying that even if she couldn't help Nozomi as Pretty Cure, they could still be friends. Naturally, Bunbee picked that moment to come back, and the magical girls were hopelessly outmatched in the ensuing fight. Genius that she is, Karen ran out in front of everyone, proclaiming that even though she was powerless, she still wanted to help everyone. As it turns out, genuinely wanting to help was what the butterfly had been waiting for, and it reappeared and turned into sort of a watch, allowing Karen to transform into Cure Aqua and easily turn things around.

When the topic came up, Nozomi suggested that Karen be the leader of Pretty Cure, but Karen said "no u" and Nozomi became the leader instead, which proceeded to not matter for the rest of the series anyway because basically everyone gave everyone else orders. Karen was able to get along reasonably well with the others, but with strong opinions and surprisingly weak social skills, she was a source of some friction early on--first having difficulty adjusting to her equally opinionated teammate Rin, then attempting to help Nozomi improve her grades but pushing her too hard and upsetting her. It was never anything too bad, and her apologies were sincere.

Things took a turn for the worse, though, when Milk, a plush rabbit who had a crush on Nozomi's teacher/boyfriend (again, it makes sense in context), came to town. Milk and Nozomi basically failed to get along in any form whatsoever, and one of their altercations ended in a disaster that led to a shouting match that left everyone feeling awkward the next day. With the five Pretty Cures emotionally split apart for the time being, the Nightmare Group took their chance to strike, forcing Karen into a creepy mind-rape sequence where a copy of herself forced her to acknowledge her deepest fear: that in always pushing herself forward, she'd left everyone else behind, and didn't have any real friends. The resulting soul-crushing despair left her vulnerable to a "Mask of Despair" which put her under the Nightmares' control. After three more such sequences, Nozomi (the last remaining Cure) did some stuff we don't care about and then managed to snap Karen and the others out of it using the Power of True Friendship, and after some exchanged reassurances and apologies, Milk finally decided to start being useful and they all gained the ability to kill giant crazy guys by crashing a giant mechanical butterfly into them. Seriously.

The mid-season upgrade thus secured, Karen demonstrated her brand new Aqua Tornado attack on a Nightmare who'd screwed up Komachi's plans for a summer festival, and gradually befriended Milk, encouraging her to not be such an asshole all the time. This eventually led her to defend Milk by riding on horseback and fighting with a sword. The sword came pretty much completely out of nowhere, but we don't care because it was awesome. At some point presumably after this, there was a movie that does not fit into continuity, but if it did then Karen would have fought her evil twin, and she would have felt really bad about killing her but still would have done it because I mean she's evil and that's what Karen does to evil people.

After a few more months of running around having episodic adventures, the writers realized "oh yeah, we need an ending," and they finally found the last plot coupon creature they needed to activate the MacGuffin. So naturally the Nightmares immediately stole it, and they had to go on the offensive to get it back, and Nozomi ended up turning their leader good with the power of friendship but then the Nightmare leader insisted they had to kill her anyway so they did. And all the talking plush toys went back to their home dimension and took the glowing butterflies with them, so Karen and the others were de-powered for all of one week.

Then a pretty lady from an infinite garden of roses (oh-so-creatively named Cure Rose Garden) sent Nozomi another MacGuffin in the mail, and they all teamed up with the mailman (who was secretly a penguin) to protect it from another evil group called Eternal. (Which was, incidentally, Bunbee's new workplace, because he's awesome and the fans demanded he come back.) Karen got a new costume and a new attack called Sapphire Arrow which I already described earlier. Then a ~*mysterious*~ girl named Kurumi who could transform into a magical girl named Milky Rose started appearing, and it took all the non-Nozomis in the group all of ten seconds to work out that this was probably just Milk with a new ability to take human form, and indeed she was. And they were all really just way too powerful at this point, but so were the bad guys so it kind of evened out.

Karen stayed friends with everyone, and they got trapped in various storybooks together (yes, this was a thing that happened on a regular basis). Karen got dragged into competing on a game show that turned out to be rigged and run by Eternal, and the whole thing almost ended really badly but Karen saved everyone by exploiting loopholes in the rules and therefore winning a coin flip on a technicality. They all went to downtown Tokyo, where Karen visited a hospital (she wants to become a doctor when she grows up) and met a little boy who gave her an apple. But Karen's personality was pretty much set in stone by this point so none of this really matters to us. Eventually the five Cures got turned to stone by a Medusa knockoff who promptly got killed by her boss, but they got better and all six magical girls teamed up to kill the leader of Eternal by--I swear this actually happened--summoning a giant woman to give him a hug. And they all lived happily ever after, unless you count the crossover movies in which she fought more bad guys and experienced no development whatsoever.

And apparently during all this she was also hanging out on an interdimensional LJ/DW community.

Personality:

Karen is kind-hearted and responsible to a fault, willing to help people well beyond what could reasonably be expected of her and blaming herself when her help isn't quite enough. She places a very high value on doing things "correctly," whether that's with respect to rules, traditions, or just what seems right to her, and gets frustrated easily when other people don't meet her standards. She is very persistent (some would say "stubborn"), and has a strong competitive and somewhat arrogant streak that surfaces quickly when people question her or her ability; on the other hand, it's easy to go a long time without seeing this side of her at all. Karen vastly prefers to feel that she is in control of a given situation, and as a side effect she has a tendency to try to take charge in situations where there isn't already someone giving orders, just because she feels comfortable doing so.

Also, she thinks of stalking people as a perfectly normal way to find out what they're up to. It's a YPC5 thing.

Other: Everyone is in Karen's harem.

First Person (entry type): Here, have an old post.

Third Person:

"Blue is a color that calms the heart" was how Karen liked to explain it, and this time would likely be no different. She'd seen Rin paying special attention to a pot of red tulips over the past few weeks, and knowing her luck, today would be the day the other girl decided to bring them in. Well, Karen wasn't going to lose today--after all the chaos yesterday, "calm" would definitely sound appealing to everyone. Her violets would get the most prominent placement in the store.

It was Jiiya, now that she thought about it, who'd introduced her to what blue did. It'd been when she was little, and her parents had just recently left. She'd been crying, and trying to pretend she wasn't--looking back, there was no possible way she could have fooled anyone--and to try to calm her down, he'd had her help him decorate one of the guest rooms in white and blue. It hadn't helped, but once they were done, it was amazing how much calmer she felt in that room.

Of course, times had changed since then--she'd learned to keep careful control of herself, with just a few minor slips that were mostly caused by Nozomi in one way or another. But that didn't mean she didn't still feel upset inside, and so when her parents had to cancel a trip home, or when the stress from student council work got to be too much, or when she yelled at Nozomi about something and was worried Nozomi would hate her now, it was good to have whatever help she could get.

Besides, she knew for a fact that Rin did not like blue, and Rin needed to be taken down a peg or two lately.

Character: Mikasa Ackerman
Fandom: Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin)
Character Notes:
History:
Before we get to Mikasa's personal history, a few notes about her world are in order. Like the fact that about a hundred years ago humanity was almost driven to extinction by giant man-eating humanoids they call titans. Yeah, that's kind of notable. Humanity came to live within three rings of massive walls which are implied to be somewhere in this world's Europe- Wall Maria (the outermost), Wall Rose, and Wall Sina (the innermost, and home to heads of government and other officials). The two outermost walls contained various towns, farmland, and natural resources, while the innermost contains one large town, natural resources, and the highest ground.

Mikasa was born to parents who lived on a homestead near one of the gate towns of Wall Maria. Her mother was the last living human from Asia (presumably Japan, considering the name she gave her daughter). Mikasa had a somewhat isolated but happy childhood. She loved her parents.

Until, when she was eleven, a group of three human traffickers attacked their home, killed her parents, and kidnapped her, intending to sell her on the black market.

But that day was also the day a certain Dr. Jaeger was due to visit the household, and he happened to bring along his son, the 11-year-old Eren. When they discovered the bodies of the Ackermans, Dr. Jaeger sent Eren to get help, but instead Eren checked out a nearby abandoned homestead, which happened to be where the traffickers were keeping Mikasa at the moment. Eren came in, pretending to be lost, and managed to kill the two men in the room with Mikasa, and then to free her. The third man, however, easily got the better of Eren, and started to strangle the boy. Eren urged Mikasa, who had been more or less frozen with shock throughout the entire incident, to fight. She picked up the knife he had dropped and, after a moment of realization that the way of the world was to kill or be killed, stabbed the last man in the heart.

After this incident, the Jaegers became Mikasa's foster family. She grew to be a part of the family, and was particularly close to Eren. She also became friends with Eren's friend Armin. Unfortunately, this was only to last for a year.

No one had any reason to think that the walls could fail. But then, the colossal titan appeared, a titan taller than even the wall, which took out the gate with one kick and vanished. And the titans poured through Wall Maria, destroying homes and eating whoever they found. Dr. Jaeger was out working that day, but his wife was. A local member of the Stationary Troops was able to save Mikasa and Eren, and get them to the evacuation, but Mrs. Jaeger was trapped under part of the house and couldn't be saved. At least, not in the time before she was eaten.

So Mikasa had lost her family, and almost all of her foster family. Dr. Jaeger proved to be missing after that day, and no one has seen him since.

Eren, Mikasa, and Armin all ended up doing hard work on farms inside Wall Rose, as part of efforts to make up for the arable land lost along with Wall Maria, and because frankly there was nowhere else to put most of the refugees. When they turned fourteen, all three enlisted in the military and began training (yeah, you can enter the military at fourteen. things are kind of messed up, you may have noticed.)

If accepted, I would be pulling Mikasa from her last year of training- a year before canon proper (with the attack on Wall Rose) starts.

Personality:
It hit me that living was like a miracle. And in that instant, my body stopped trembling. From that moment, I was able to perfectly control myself. I thought I could do anything.
...
This is a cruel world, and only the winners survive.

It's implied that before the death of her parents, Mikasa was a fairly normal child. Somewhat reserved and isolated, maybe, but curious, responsive, and expressive. She is not that child now. Mikasa is quiet, stoic, and overwhelmingly controlled.

It would be a bit of an exaggeration to say that Mikasa's approach to life is based entirely on Eren's words to her during their fight with the last human trafficker- "Fight! If you don't fight, we're gonna die. If you win, we live. If you don't fight, we can't win." But it wouldn't be that much of one. Mikasa is a level-headed person (one of the ways to tell if she's actually upset is to see if she's neglecting things like logistics), and tends to be the voice of practicality in the group of three that Eren, Armin, and her make up. But in spite of that, she has a total disregard for the odds being against her in more or less any kind of confrontation. She fights to live. Giving up would be a form of death. But this is really a personal thing, a lack of regard for her own safety. She'll risk herself without a second thought, but if someone she cares about (like Eren) seems to be ignoring the odds against them, she's likely to try to dissuade them (though she'll still back them up if they go against her advice).

Mikasa's not really a people person. She has a very few who are close to her, a few more who she respects or will at least listen to, and others she really neither likes or dislikes. It can take a lot of impressive action or planning to earn Mikasa's respect, and the ways of getting close to her seem to more or less be a) do something incredibly drastic for her (i.e. Eren) or b) be a close friend of Eren's (i.e. Armin). She is, overall, very self-contained. She rarely starts conversations or seeks out new company. She does, though, understand that she lives and works in a group setting, and if the situation calls for it she'll engage the group thoroughly (would a tough love inspiring speech help you not freeze up and get eaten? Mikasa will provide.). She also does have a subtle sense of humor that comes out in some of her interactions with the others in her training class. Mikasa has a bit of a habit of slightly trolling Sasha, doing things like pretending to agree to give Sasha food for a moment and then eating it herself. (This is about as funny as the series ever gets. It is more body-a-minute than laugh-a-minute.)

She is extremely devoted to her personal goals and beliefs, and if that puts her in opposition to military or civilian law, well, screw the law. She believes she has something an obligation to protect others, and doesn't really see why threatening people with murder in order to get more people to safety would ever be a problem. But while she does have this altruistic function when she's operating on her own, it's a completely different matter when people she cares about are involved. It is Mikasa's personal goals that ultimately motivate her, which makes her fundamentally selfish in a way. She's intent on protecting her "family," Eren, and her friend Armin. If that means potentially fighting the rest of the goddamn army, she'll do it.

The most important thing in the world to Mikasa is family. Family is happiness, family is what warmth there is in the world. There are hints that she might have romantic feelings for Eren, but as far as what's actually canon, the way she expresses his importance to her is "he's family." Mikasa's not a dreamer. She's not an idealist. She just wants to be able to keep what she values most. Fortunately, she is well-equipped to do that by killing titans.

This is a cruel world. And yet, so beautiful.

Other:
Mikasa is canonically totally ripped. This is very relevant information.

First Person (entry type):
[handwritten journal entry]

My right leg is stronger than the left. I need to start exercising in the morning to make it stronger. Wake up a quarter hour earlier. I must be favoring the right sometimes- watch for that and make sure it doesn't happen again. Be careful about arms, too.

Armin's grip strength is weak- remember to teach him exercises for that. The instructors won't. He'll never pass the physical tests if he drops his swords.

Out of thread again. If Eren and Armin don't have any I have to get some from supplies tomorrow to repair the torn jacket before the spare gets torn.

Third Person:
They called her a "natural," when they thought she wouldn't hear and risk getting a big head. Even a natural can make mistakes. Even a natural can die.

It was true that she was stronger than most. But her skill with the three-dimensional maneuverability gear and fighting was less, she thought, about "natural" talent and more about paying attention. It was about knowing where your body was, how to take enough weight off of one area to free up another, how to start and how to stop. It was about control. That was what you needed to win.

She cleaned her gear carefully, taking more time than some of the others. Jean and Annie just did the minimum for it to function and left for the dining hall. Sasha tried to be more diligent, but she was never one to let many get to food before her. But Mikasa, and others, lingered. Their lives could depend on these machines. There was nothing "natural" about it.

Or maybe there was. The prey adapted to become harder to prey upon. The predator adapted as well. That was documented in nature, though it wasn't always successful.

She held her gear up to the light. Yes, that was clean now.

Current Characters: the tenth Doctor, Pearl Fey, Lyle Dylandy, Roxas, Madoka Kaname, Castiel

Character: Saber ( aka Arturia Pendragon, King of Knights )
Fandom: Fate/Zero
Character Notes:
History:
Saber is one of the Heroic Spirits that may be summoned by a mage bearing the appropriate Command Seals to fight as the Servant half of a Master-Servant pair in the Grail wars, contests in which seven of these pairs in total compete for the chance to wish for a miracle from the Fuyuki Holy Grail. Before she became one of these spirits, however, in life she was known as Arturia Pendragon, or more commonly, King Arthur of Camelot, the Once and Future King of Britain.

Yes, King Arthur is a girl.

The King Arthur legend is pretty well-known, so I won’t take up too much time with it here. Arturia was born as the heir to the throne at a time when the island of Britain was pretty much falling apart at the seams with war and chaos brought about by the Roman Empire’s collapse. Her father, Uther Pendragon, was disappointed at the child being a girl, as he could not make her his successor. As a result, she was entrusted by Merlin to the care of Sir Ector, and raised as a knight alongside his biological son Kay. On the day the prophecy had foretold as the day that would reveal Britain’s rightful king, Arturia pulled Caliburn from the stone it had been set in, marking her as the true king. From the moment she pulled the sword from the stone, she ceased to age and became “something not human”.

The next ten years were marked by victory after victory in battle, with Arturia commanding many knights including those of the famous Round Table. Unfortunately, it was not to last. Arturia had married Guinevere due to the expectations for a King to have a wife; however, Lancelot, one of her most trusted knights and closest friends, had fallen in love with Guinevere. Although Arturia knew of this and didn’t blame either party, the affair would be one of the cracks that would cause the eventual downfall of her reign, and the repercussions from the affair’s discovery would come to affect both Arturia and Lancelot even after the two became Heroic Spirits. Arturia’s reign came to an end at the Battle of Camlann, where she was mortally wounded by Mordred (who incidentally is a homunculus created from sperm from when Merlin thought he’d turn Arturia into a dude and give her a penis for a bit for shits and giggles and just don’t even question the Nasuverse, okay.) As she lay on her deathbed, she began to regret her failures as King, and at that point made a contract with the world – in return for her services as a Heroic Spirit, she wanted a chance to gain the Holy Grail to save her country by undoing her kingship.

ENTER THE EVENTS OF FATE/ZERO.

Arturia is summoned under the Saber class by Emiya Kiritsugu, a chosen Master who wishes to use the Grail to save the world. However, as Saber and Kiritsugu’s personalities aren’t compatible, and also so that Kiritsugu can persue his strategy from behind the scenes, Saber is paired with Kiritsugu’s wife, Irisviel von Einzbern, as a proxy Master. The three of them travel to Fuyuki to await the start of the Fourth Grail War, and do not have to wait long; that night, Saber is challenged by Lancer. In the ensuing battle, the two gain a respect for each other, although Saber sustains a cursed wound from one of the other Servant’s weapons that leaves her unable to use her left hand, and thus unable to use the power of her Noble Phantasm (her ultimate weapon/attack, aka Excalibur. It’s kind of A Big Deal).

The fight quickly degenerates into chaos after that as Rider, Archer and Berserker arrive on the scene one after the other. Things only come to an end when after Lancer’s Master, Kayneth, uses one of his Command Seals to compel his Servant to help Berserker kill Saber; Rider intervenes to preserve Lancer’s honour and allow Saber and Lancer to finish their duel another time.

Retreating to the Einzberns’ Fuyuki castle, Iri and Saber have a run-in with the utterly batshit Caster, who’s under the delusion that Saber is his long-lost Joan of Arc; although she drives him off, she’s unable to convince him that that’s not the case. At the castle, more differences between Kiritsugu and Saber become apparent; she finds his decisions to kill Kayneth in an attempt to remove her handicap, and to avoid Caster (who has an unfortunate habit of torturing and killing children) in order to allow another Servant to kill him, totally deplorable. At that moment, Caster himself shows up at the castle, and Saber goes out to engage him. However, she is unable to get anywhere close due to her handicap and the endless supply of tentacle monsters he can call with his magic. Luckily, at that moment Lancer shows up, and the two manage to damage Caster’s Noble Phantasm and drive him back, flirting madly the whole time you cannot tell me that’s not what they were doing. Lancer leaves soon after to help his Master, sensing that he’s in danger from Kiritsugu, and Saber allows him to leave out of chivalry and due to the promise they made to finish their duel.

After the chaos settles down and Kiritsugu has left, Iri and Saber find the castle invaded once more, this time by Rider, who just rides in through the front door on his chariot with a huge keg of wine like it ain’t no thang. Turns out he’s there to hold an impromptu King’s Banquet, and so Rider, Archer and Saber all proceed to sit around drinking wine and arguing about kingship (or rather, Saber and Rider argue about kingship and Archer just sits there being amused. Or possibly bored. It’s hard to tell with him.). Saber almost has a heroic BSOD when Rider more or less viciously shoots her Grail wish down as the foolish dream of a little girl and then proceeds to completely annihilate the interloping Assassin using the army of supporters inside his Reality Marble.

Soon after, Saber, Iri, and Maiya move to a new base of operations, a traditional Japanese house. There, Saber discovers that Iri is growing weaker as a result of being the designated vessel for the Grail’s appearance. As they settle in to their new base, they sense a hideously strong magical presence coming from the city’s river, and upon arriving discover that Caster has magicked up what is essentially a giant river Cthulu I swear I am not making this up. Saber teams up with Rider and Lancer to fight the tentacley monstrosity and then follows three episodes of them fighting this thing while Berserker wrecks things and gets on Archer’s nerves and Archer mostly just watches everything disdainfully. Eventually, after Lancer breaks the curse that prevents her hand from healing, and with Rider using his Reality Marble as a distraction, Saber is able to unveil Excalibur and use it to defeat the monster – and Caster – in one fell stroke. Unfortunately in the process she unwittingly makes Archer think he has leave to creep all over her from afar.

Following a tip-off from Kiritsugu, Iri and Saber arrive at the hideout that Kayneth is using. Lancer and Saber decide the time is right to finish their duel, but Saber is shocked when, part way through their fight, Lancer suddenly impales himself on his own lance, cursing everyone around him; unknown to either of the Servants, Kiritsugu had blackmailed Kayneth from behind the scenes with a deal; Kiritsugu would put a Geas on himself that would prevent him harming Kayneth or his fiancée, if Kayneth used his remaining Command Seal to force Lancer to commit suicide. Naturally this doesn’t work out in Kayneth’s favour at all because Kiritsugu is a cheating bastard and Maiya shoots Kayneth and Sola from afar as soon as Lancer is dead, forcing Saber to mercy-kill Kayneth so he doesn’t die slowly and painfully. This has the added effect of driving a further wedge between Saber and her Master.

Iri’s condition continues to worsen as more Servants fall and the Grail nears completion, meaning that she can no longer accompany Saber when she goes to search for the remaining Servants to eliminate them. One day while Saber is out looking for Rider, she is suddenly compelled to return to their hideout by Kiritsugu activating a Command Seal, where she finds Iri has been kidnapped by Rider and Maiya is lying severely wounded. Saber leaves to follow the trail, but after catching up with Rider and his Master during a frankly mind-boggling motorcycle-chariot chase that breaks most of the laws of physics, she discovers that they were not the real kidnappers; it was another Servant in disguise. The two Servants still duel, however, which results in Saber blowing up Rider’s chariot before riding off.

On the final night of the Grail war, Saber finds herself attacked by Berserker. The fight is furious, but during it she realizes that Berserker must be someone she knew in life, as he’s able to catch her sword despite the length of it being hidden with Invisible Air. She’s shocked when Berserker removes his helmet and the spell concealing his identity to reveal none other than Lancelot. Although Saber is able to defeat him after the death of his Master, she is still shaken and preoccupied, believing it to be the fault of her mistakes in life that her old friend turned to madness.

Making her way to the Grail’s stage, Saber finds Archer, who suggests that she surrender and become his wife instead. Saber refuses and prepares herself for a hopeless fight, but the two are interrupted by the arrival of Kiritsugu, who uses his remaining two Command Seals to force Saber to destroy the Grail with Excalibur without telling her the reason was that he’d discovered the Grail was corrupted by evil. Compelled against her will, Saber destroys it with her Noble Phantasm’s attack before vanishing. She abruptly finds herself back at the aftermath of one of the final battles of her life, regretting that she both failed to win the Grail and to understand her people, and still wishing that she had never become king.

Personality:
Saber is for the most part an outwardly calm yet determined individual. She possesses an incredibly strong will, and although she remains polite and dignified at almost all times, she also holds no qualms about speaking her mind to people, regardless of the situation. If she believes someone to have made a mistake, or if someone has done or said something that she finds personally offensive, she will tell them so without a second thought. One could go as far to say that she is very stubborn, and they would be right; Saber is one who holds fast to her path and her ideals, and her pride means she does not take kindly to any slights against them.

Her determination is combined with the strong sense of duty and chivalry that she holds from being the self-proclaimed King of Knights. To Saber, one’s duty, to either one’s country or one’s master, is among one of the most important things one can bear. As a result, she is loyal as well as stubborn, and values the traits of honour and chivalry, both in other people and in herself. Linked to her sense of honour, she has a strong moral code that she holds herself to rigidly, and finds it difficult if not impossible to see eye to eye with anyone who goes against it. As such, she is heavily against any course of action that would result in innocent people getting hurt, although she grudgingly accepts that there are some situations when this is inevitable. This is one of the main bones of contention between her and Kiritsugu throughout the series, as despite feeling some measure of loyalty to him as her designated Master, she cannot accept his methods (win by any means) to be either right or honourable.

Saber’s sense of duty and her strong morals are what led her in her human life to originally take up the mantle of kingship; although she knew that it would be a hard road and she would cease to be human as soon as she pulled Caliburn from the stone, she was resolute and claimed that she was prepared to make that sacrifice. For Saber, the prosperity and well-being of her country and people is paramount, and this is reflected in her views on kingship. For her, being a king is about offering one’s life to serve one’s people regardless of how lonesome the path is or the cost to one’s own desires, and this sense of self-sacrifice for the sake of others forms a central part of her identity. Indeed, she has stated that she would readily die for her ideals.

However, it also forms a great source of grief for her; due to the way her reign ended, Saber believes herself to have been a failure of a ruler. As a result of her guilt, her only wish is to save her country by undoing her reign so that someone more fitting can take up the mantle instead. Her past failures weigh heavily on Saber’s mind, although she still retains some of the traits that contributed to them. For instance, Saber’s reserved and almost cold appearance is not her true personality, but a result of her suppressing her emotions out of the belief that a King should be impartial; it hides a more gentle, lonely side of her that she can't afford to pay attention to. However, although playing the role of the perfect King brought her reign great success, it was also what caused its downfall, as one of the knights who left the Round Table commented that “King Arthur is a King who cannot understand anybody”. Her high-minded ideals are both her greatest source of strength and her greatest curse, having allowed her to help her country the way she did in the first place, but also inadvertently contributing to its ruin. Whether she will break under the weight of them, as Rider predicts will happen, or continue to successfully bear them with the inner strength she possesses, has yet to be seen.

Other: she has balls of orichalcum which she carries in her pocket and uses to hit douches in the face. it is known.

First Person (entry type):
The longer Kiritsugu remains my Master, the less I find myself able to understand him. The actions he took tonight at the warehouse… I doubt I will be able to forgive him for that. It’s been several hours, and I still find myself furious. It would be bad enough had he only robbed both Lancer and I of our honour, but the way he deceived the Master was unthinkable. How can a man that claims he wants to save the world bring himself to act in such a way? He may blame whom he likes the state of humanity, but even wars require rules of engagement. That he would throw them away so carelessly…

Then, there’s Irisviel. Her condition continues to worsen the closer we get to the Grail’s completion. After Kiritsugu left tonight, she collapsed, and I don’t have any doubt she only held on so long so that he wouldn’t have to see it. She is resting now within the magic circle we prepared, so hopefully she’ll soon improve, but even so… I’m growing increasingly concerned. I’ve come to enjoy her company, but I doubt she will have the strength now to accompany me in any future battles. For now, I will simply guard her to the best of my ability.

Third Person:
Irisviel didn't say anything, but Saber could still feel the weight of her gaze as they made their way out of the cold night air and into the castle. The other woman was worried, she could tell, but as grateful as Saber felt for her concern in spite of herself, she was still more grateful that Irisviel chose not to voice it. The anger and shock that she had felt at hearing Rider's words not even half an hour earlier had left her, but the shame... the shame still remained.

Because as much as she wished she could deny it, she knew he had been right; at least on the matter of her knights. Despite appearances she had loved each one of them dearly, though she hadn't shown it. No, because as she'd seen it, she couldn't show it; a King had to remain distant and impartial at all times. She'd been preparing herself for that since she was a girl, she'd known she would have to lay her own emotions aside in order to lead her country out of the chaos it had been drowning in. But had she been wrong after all? Should she have been more open? After all, even one of those she'd thought among her closest friends had--

Saber shook her head slightly, as if to clear it. It had been her own failings, both as a friend and as King, that were to blame. Rider's words had hardly affected her position on that. If anything, the reminder of how she had failed her people so badly only reminded her of how important it was to obtain the Grail. The rule of Britain could be given to someone better, then. Someone who would truly save it, not allow their knights and their own pride to lead a circle back to its downfall. Which meant, of course, that she didn't have time for guilt. That would distract her, maybe even long enough to be fatal.

"Saber?"

She didn't start, but she did let out a soft breath at Irisviel's words. She supposed she must have been truly deep in thought. The white-haired woman smiled softly, almost in understanding.

"I was going to have some tea prepared. Would you like some? I thought it might do us both good."

It did not take long to consider. Servants may not have needed to eat or drink strictly speaking, not if they were supplied with sufficient enough power from their Master. But nonetheless, Saber still enjoyed it, and the tea she had taken with Irisviel on their first morning together had been pleasant. After what had just happened, she couldn't help but find herself agreeing with her.

She nodded, a small smile crossing her face in return. "That would be very kind."

She couldn't allow a few well-chosen words from the King of Conquerers to dissuade her. She had made a contract with the world, and Saber was determined that it would be successful. She would win the Grail, and her country would be saved. She swore it on her honour as a knight.

Character: Michael
Fandom: Saint Young Men
Character Notes:
History: In the beginning there was God, who made a whole lot of stuff, and called it good. He also made angels. Among these angels are the archangels Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel, who generally spend a lot of time hanging out together.

At one point in the history of creation, Lucifer decided that he should be bigger than God, and led an army of angels against those who still followed the laws of Heaven. Chief among those angels who followed God was Michael, who despite all his love for his fellow angels no matter how much they rebelled, defeated Lucifer out of loyalty to God and sent him down from Heaven. Michael became the chief of hosts for the army of Heaven.

Michael's job later also became being the advocate of Israel, which was good because Israel constantly gets itself into trouble. He rescued Isaac from being sacrificed by putting a ram in his place, rescued Lot at Sodom, reminded Ahashveros that he was in debt to Mordecai, et cetera et cetera. Generally any time anyone does anything bad to Israel and an angel is mentioned, that angel will be Michael.

Over the years Michael has been respected as a warrior angel, an angel of healing, and an angel of death, who brings the souls of the dead to heaven and gives them one last chance to repent.

Later there was a Messiah, Jesus Christ, who was awesome. Michael became one of Jesus's bodyguard squad. At the time of canon, Jesus is living in a low-rent apartment in Japan with Buddha, who is also awesome and respected in Heaven, and Michael's job is basically showing up whenever he thinks Jesus might need him.

This includes when Jesus eats too spicy wasabi. While Uriel stabs the wasabi plant and declares that its tree will no longer bear fruit, Michael declares that the spa they're staying at is amazing and that Uriel should probably relax a little. He's gotten into the high-class residences by claiming that the archangels are a pop idol group, and later calls Jesus and Buddha their seniors in the area of pop.

In the future Michael will play the trumpet to sound the second coming of Christ. In the meantime he has to remember not to play this trumpet or
Personality: Michael, for all his acclaims as the most famous angel still in heaven? Is a massive derp. Seriously.

He's easily distracted from his duties by things like massage chairs and other spa enmities. It was his idea to make God's chosen archangels into a pop idol group, and he happily refers to Jesus Christ and Buddha as their 'senpai'. He loves cats and pictures of cats on his phone. He has nothing at all to do with the fierce, stern figure of a warrior angel some would think of him as.

Michael is also a kind person with love for everybody in the world. He was crying when he had to fight Lucifer, and to this day wishes for his return to Heaven and God's love. It's hard not to get along with him, even if you're annoyed by his lack of taking anything seriously: he simply is just that nice and he will win you over.

His loyalty to God is strong, however, and when it comes down to it he will perform his duties as the prince of hosts, as an angel who brings healing and an angel who leads souls to Heaven. As much as he loves everything else in the world, he loves God above all other things.

He would rather not have to do any of the worst parts of his job. While Jesus and Buddha are on vacation, he's glad to have the opportunity to explore the modern world with them and check out all the new things that humans have invented. Because humans are awesome.
Other: Michael generally does not use most of his angelic powers. He'd rather explore the world normally knthx.

First Person (entry type): Excuse me, could I have anyone's attention for a moment?

I was thinking that we could form a singing group in the community! Performances of beautiful melodies will cheer up anyone in a pinch. And, I'm sure that people here have plenty of musical talent! After all, we've been brought here from so many different places, perhaps you know of instruments that even I've never seen. It will be a wonderful experience!

So, who wants to join me? I'll be willing to come to your world for auditions, so please don't worry about arranging a worldhop. I'll take care of everything for you!

Third Person: This duck place... Even Jesus's blog didn't have this kind of technology. In fact, the Messiah's blog didn't have any weird kind of technology more advanced than what a human sitting at his computer in his basement would have.

This duck place, on the other hand, connected worlds. It spanned different times and threw the laws of physics away in favor of allowing people to come together from completely separate universes.

Had Michael been chosen to be the envoy to other worlds? He wasn't sure he could handle this...! He'd feel better if he had the other archangels to back him up, but maybe it was for the best that they couldn't be indisposed if something bad happened to the ducks. After all, other worlds were important, but so was the one Michael resided in. Juggling his duties was hard enough already.

Right. He was trusted with another important task, and he would do his best to treat the ducks with love and care.

Current Characters: The Fifth Doctor, Regulus Black, Marceline

Character: Kotomine Kirei
Fandom: Fate/Zero
Character Notes: MASSIVE SPOILERS BELOW

History:

Kotomine Kirei could’ve had a very successful life. No, really. He was top of his class in university, and excelled at almost any academic subject thrown at him. He even graduated two years ahead of schedule. But just when all the dominoes were all lined up, just waiting for Kirei to hit them, he walked away from the game entirely. He hopped from job to job in a haphazard, meaningless fashion. None of the above success brought him any joy, and the emptiness growing inside him couldn’t be ignored any long. From a very young age, Kirei knew something was wrong with him, and not even the frequent trips with his father Risei to holy grounds made a bit of difference.

So he married someone. Her first name’s not known, but her surname’s Hortensia. He thought that maybe finding a supposed love would help. Hortensia was terminally ill, even before Kirei walked into the picture, and he picked her purposefully for his... little experiment. He even had a daughter with her. And, indeed, if Kirei were a normal sort of person, that might be the end of the story. It isn’t, because for all the love and faith shown to him, all he wanted was to hurt them. His wife helped. Tried her best, even. But even she couldn’t close the gaps in his heart, a fact that Kirei was keenly aware of. This caused Kirei to despair entirely, and he even planned to commit suicide.

He went to tell her, claiming that he couldn’t love her. She protested and beat him to the punch, killing herself in front of him. He cried. Not out of grief, but because he didn’t get to kill her. Not very long after this, a few days at the most, three command spells appeared on his hand. Kirei knew absolutely no magic whatsoever at this point, making him an astonishingly rare Master. Tohsaka Tokiomi, a friend of his father’s, agreed to teach him magic. Tokiomi planned to use Kirei as a subordinate throughout the entire war, using the servant Assassin. Kirei agreed to this, as he had no idea what wish he would even make on the grail, or why he had been chosen at all. For three years, he trained under Tokiomi, only showing clear aptitude for healing spells.

On cusp of the Fourth Holy Grail War, Kirei found something worth focusing on. No, not the grail, but another Master, one named Emiya Kiritsugu. From the information and rumors spread about Kiritsugu and the disasters left in his wake, Kirei became fascinated by what such a man would wish for. Not only that, but he believed Kiritsugu to be exactly like him, incapable of finding happiness and seeking death. Thus, he planned to face Kiritsugu during the war about to ensue to ask him what the worth of a worthless being is.

He summoned Assassin as planned. His opening move in the war was to order him to attack Tokiomi. Assassin then proceeded to get turned into dust and splinters by Gilgamesh, Tokiomi’s Archer class Servant. This was, in fact, entirely the point of the plan. Assassin is something of a hivemind, where there’s multiple copies and versions. However, with his apparent servant removed from the picture, Kirei sought protection from the church. The one his Father operates. You following along with this?

Alright, ‘cause this is where the fun starts. Gilgamesh, out of boredom and disdain for Tokiomi, wanders off and finds Kirei’s wine stash. The two start chatting, and Gilgamesh probes Kirei for what he wants from the Grail. Kirei claims he couldn’t wish for something so sinful, causing Gilgamesh to raise his eyebrows and add 2 + 2 together to get ‘Kirei is kind of fucked up’. He encourages Kirei to live a little. There’s some everything related innuendo here. Still, at Gilgamesh’s pushing, he starts digging into the various Masters and what they want out of the Grail. He reports these findings to Gilgamesh later on, spending way too much time focusing on Matou Kariya. Kariya basically only gets his powers from sadness and worms, and isn’t too much of a threat. Yet, if you hear Kirei tell it, this guy was the heart and soul of the entire Grail War.

He clashes with Team Kiritsugu a few times, once to call them out on planting a familiar to spy on the church and once during a clusterfuck of a battle in the forest by their castle. The Grail War continues on, and when Tokiomi decides to find out just how strong Rider’s Noble Phantasm is, Kirei sends his assassins to zerg rush him. It works well enough, proving that Rider’s made of kickassery and loyalty, but this causes Kirei to be booted from the war. Before he gets time off enough to enjoy it, or even last one conversation without Gilgamesh tempting him, the command spells re-appear on his hand. It seems that the Grail really, really wants Kirei to stick around.

Another clusterfuck of a battle happens, this time vs Caster who’s gone all Lovecraft on a river and his Master, Uryuu Ryuunosuke. Kirei doesn’t take part in the battle, however, Tokiomi and Kariya have a showdown that ends with burninating Kariya in the face. Now, a loyal partner would just let Kariya die. Heck, it’s probably the right thing to do, as it’d put him out of his misery. Instead, Kirei heals him. He isn’t sure why he does this, or why he feels so happy about it, but as his inner demons start piling up, he decides to go to the church and talk with his father.

He doesn’t get the chance to find out what Risei would’ve said. He’s dead by the time he gets there. Risei entrusts the remaining command spells, a very large surplus in fact, solely to him. Kirei doesn’t take it very well, putting it mildly. The revelation that he’s been trying to deny for the better part of his life comes knocking, and this time there’s nobody around to answer the door for him. All it takes is one last push, in the form of Tokiomi almost sending him away from the war entirely, for him to start making moves to qualify him for villain song status.

Gilgamesh never much liked Tokiomi. However, it takes a little bit more convincing to get Archer to voluntarily not protect the guy supplying him with mana at the moment. Kirei, luckily enough, has just such a trump card in his back pocket: Tokiomi was planning to use his command spells to kill Gilgamesh at the end of the War, so he could inherit the Grail. Kirei also has that above mentioned pile of command spells just waiting around for an excuse. And thus Team Yuetsu is born. Kirei literally stabs Tokiomi in the back with the very dagger he’d just been entrusted as a sign of friendship, and Gilgamesh becomes his servant.

And for the afterparty, Kirei even produces a play. He has Kariya use Berserker’s abilities to pretend to be Rider and kidnap Kiritsugu’s wife. In exchange, he offers to set up a meeting with Tokiomi for Kariya. He makes good on his promise. It’s just he left out that Tokiomi’s dead at the time. Tokiomi’s wife, Aoi, shows up at the exact same time Kariya realizes he was set up, and the end result is choking and brain damage for Aoi and the last splinters of Kariya’s sanity going up in smoke. Matou Zouken figures out what Kirei’s up to, and stalks him on the rooftop to gloat about Kariya’s misery. Kirei hasn’t entirely given up on his conscience just yet, so he finds Zouken reprehensible and launches a wolverine knife at him. Doesn’t work, due to various plotty reasons, but the intent’s clear enough.

So after god knows how many paragraphs of tl;dr, we arrive at the ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny: Kirei vs Kiritsugu. Kirei snaps during a talk with Irisviel, and he retaliates by snapping her neck. See, she revealed that Kiritsugu loves her, and Kirei sort of spent the last 23 episodes trying to convince himself otherwise. So, now he wants nothing more than to kick Kiritsugu’s ass until he cries. And it actually seems to work fairly well. We’re talking dodging bullets at triple speed. But then the entire battlefield gets drenched in Evil Grail Juice, and while begging to allow the evil in the grail to be born, Kiritsugu shoots him in the back.

Luckily, the evil grail juice provides Kirei with an extra life. Yay! All it cost him was his heart, which works because he never had one anyway. Kirei finds Gilgmesh in the aftermath of the massive destruction/fireball caused by Kiritsugu attempting to destroy the Grail. He has an hysterical breakdown over it, as he believes this destruction is what he wished for. He spots Kiritsugu in the wreckage, a completely broken man, and Kirei lets him go.

Oh, and he makes Tohsaka Rin cry at Tokiomi’s funeral, when he gifts her the dagger Tokiomi got shanked with. What a bastard.

Personality:

Kotomine Kirei begins dull eyed and blank faced. In fact, it’s entirely possible to forget he even exists in the early episodes. He’s very calm, to the point of appearing robotic. He very seldom talks, and when he does, it’s almost always relatively brief and composed. He even has quite a few doormat tendencies, best demonstrated as his willingness to play second fiddle to Tokiomi. More often than not, Tokiomi’s the one telling him how to use Assassin, and more often than not, he listens. He has beats and rhythms, but on the whole and on the balance, he appears as a non-entity in his own story to begin with.

Kirei is a very thoughtful person. This applies in a few distinct ways: he thinks carefully about what he says, and he thinks carefully in general. He picks his words, rather than having the words come to him. He has a rampant, incessant internal monologue, and it often feels as if he’s only voicing part of it. Philosophy in general seems to interest him, if his chats with Gilgamesh are any indication. He puts great weight on the matters of good, evil, happiness, humanity, choice, you name it, he’s probably got a treatise brewing about it. If he’s not voicing it, he’s probably at the very least thinking it. He’s greatly driven by a desire to understand and be understood, to the point that he’s more interested in what various people will do with the Holy Grail than the Grail itself.

He’s an empty sort of person, and he’s desperate to find something that fulfills him. He’s tried quite a lot of things, most notably the church, his wife, and his father. He’s noted to be an excellent student, but every time he gets close to the top of the class, he disengages. When he gets his Master calling, he proclaims that he has no idea what he wants with the Grail. Even by the end of the series, grail goo interference nonwithstanding, he’s still more concerned with the wishes that can be made with it than a wish for himself. His philosophizing mostly concerns his nature, the isolated existence he leads. Whenever he does find something to latch onto, he gets very single minded to the point of misjudgement. For example, he’s utterly convinced that Kiritsugu is exactly like him, and every bit of evidence that goes against that just serves to spin his hope into hatred.

Of course, he knows damn well what he wants. To see other people suffer. Nothing else brings him joy. It doesn’t matter if it’s trolling via ugly outfits or outright murder, betrayal, and destruction. If people are hurt, and he caused it, it makes him happy. He’s like a black hole. He’s especially good at false reassurances, because he tends to know things other people don’t, and uses that hole against them. For example, he agrees to set up a meeting with Kariya and Tokiomi, and indeed he makes good on his word. Only. Well. Minor detail? Tokiomi’s dead, because Kirei killed him, and the consequences of that meeting lead to brain damage and even further sanity slippage. It’s like the second he decides to stop denying the evil side of him, all bets are off, and within maybe an hour of him starting to shine, he’s crippled half the cast in one way or another.

The only thing worse than being born evil? Being born evil with a conscience. He’s completely and perfectly aware of how messed up he is. It seems that deaths of people close to him hit really hard, if in entirely different ways. Because he can’t love them, their deaths make him sad because he didn’t get the chance to kill them himself. It’s these little realizations that occur after the deaths of his wife and his father that push him down the path he takes. With his wife, there’s the final sign that if he wanted gentle, he could’ve had it, but instead wanted nothing but to hurt her. It’s also worth noting that even ten years after fate/zero, way into /stay night, Kirei still doesn’t even know what he feels regarding his wife. As for his father, he didn’t understand him to begin with, so his death doesn’t drive him so much to despair as to fuck it, I’ll be evil.

Because of this conscience, he starts completely convinced he doesn’t deserve to be happy. When asked outright by Gilgamesh what his wish would be, he says he could never bring himself to want something so sinful. If he were anyone else in the world, this would just be a massive guilt complex. However, since Kirei is an emotional black hole, he isn’t overstating his case in the slightest. Even after he jumps off the moral event horizon, he still has this conscience to him. For example, he almost never justifies the outright evil actions he takes, like the above mentioned Kariya mindscrew or killing Irisviel or murdering Tokiomi. What he instead tries to do is justify his own existence in the first place. He does this by identifying with and defending Angra Mainyu. When the grail actually does corrupts him, and he sees the destruction his wish has wrought, he shifts to more end of the world special type villainy, but he never loses the core of his focus:

To be understood. This may explain why he hangs out with Gilgamesh so much, as at the time they meet, Kirei has spent years and years trying to deny himself his schadenfreudey happiness and Gilgamesh figures that out in about five lines of dialogue. In fact, it can be said that Gilgamesh is his sparkly salvation. Gilgamesh is the first person to not only understand him, but to accept him for who he is, darkness and all. He does try to resist the clear temptation plot brewing, but it's practically impossible. Kirei's never been as happy in his entire life as when he starts becoming true to himself, and Gilgamesh is the one who encourages and supports and prods this revelation.

The central motivation to be understood doesn't go away, however. Even after being bathed in Evil Grail Juice. This is also why he pins so much hope onto Kiritsugu, because he believes the latter to be exactly like him. He doesn’t understand how someone like him could be allowed to be born, so he seeks out someone that matches him to find out if his entire life wasn’t just a mistake. And when Kiritsugu is shown to be capable of love, something that Kirei wants so desperately to be capable of but isn’t? Yeah. That’s the last straw needed for him to go completely off the deep end.

Kirei is simultaneously a worse person and a better person than he thinks he is. Even when in the middle of a lecture, a trait which only grows as he finds he has more to say, he’ll occasionally make really excellent points. For example, it’s Kiritsugu’s willingness to discard the people he loves in pursuit of his ideals that boggles him the most, as Kirei is very aware of the void inside him. Kirei is a sort of dark reflection of a lot of people, and it’s by contrasting with him that differences and similarities pop up, however unwanted or disliked. For the worsening of the universe, but for the bettering of him, he’ll stop at nothing until he gets the answers he seeks.

Oh, and he likes Mapo Tofu, and he’ll take it extra hot, thank you.

Other: It is impossible to say his full name without a dramatic pause.

First Person (entry type):

What drives this community?

There must be a reason for its existence, and for the powers it has. Perhaps it’s a side effect from gathering so many here. Indeed, that’s very possible. But even so. There must be purpose behind what it’s doing, if it’s as intelligent as some of you claim. No network like this could sustain itself off mere batteries and cables. I wonder what it could be. Very few things in life are free, after all. Like it or not, we are all paying a price to be here. I’m sure the answer is staring us right in the face, only we refuse to see it. With good reason, I’d imagine. It’d shatter any illusions built up that this place is just harmless entertainment.

Rejoice, all of you. You won’t remain blind forever.

Third Person:

Stained glass. No church is complete without it. He’s known people who come to mass just to look through the colored fragments in the windows. He can tell. It’s in the way they look outside, the way their eyes never meet the altar, the way they sigh. As if they’re escaping through the pieces and into the light. In a way, it makes sense. Churches, after all, are largely built from stone. Imposing. Like being trapped under a weight. Some of them, of course, are the opposite. Freeing. A contradiction, between the heaviness of the stone and the lightness of the air. The thickness of incense and the brightness of candles.

Stained glass mesmerizes people. Enchants them, somehow. Fascinates, at bare minimum. When it’s nothing more than glass in a windowsill, shaped as angels and Mary and the apostles. Red and white, blue and black, the bubbles of oxygen trapped in the glass. The only glimpses of color in a dismal grey world. One well placed rock would shatter it. Sometimes in pieces in the floor. Sometimes just leaving a hole that can’t be filled.

NOTE: Using this from previous apps I've done from Digital Dive and Tower of Animus

History:Tsubomi is the oldest daughter of Mizuki and Youichi Hanasaki and oldest granddaughter of Kaoruko Hanasaki. At a young age, her parents were always on the go, absorbed into their work while Kaoruko watched over young Tsubomi. While she enjoyed being with her grandmother, Tsubomi became increasingly lonely, finally breaking down after watching a mother bird tend to her young and realizing how lonely she was. It was just by chance the rest of her family caught this. Realizing how important their family was, her parents quit their jobs and decided to move where Kaoruko live, in the sleepy town of Kibougahana. On her way to the town, though, Tsubomi had a dream. A dream of a purple-haired woman calling herself "Cure Moonlight" fighting a demon-winged woman by a tree and being defeated, her last words calling for the creatures near her to find her replacement and to have them protect the "Great Heart Tree".

Shrugging off the dream, Tsubomi made her way to her first day of school and was practically shanghaied by a very energetic classmate named Erika Kurumi. Despite the girl trying to make Tsubomi feel at home, her energy put off Tsubomi and she broke contact with her. However, this set the stage for Tsubomi's own change when, after visiting a hillside overlooking the town, she had a close-encounter with the two creatures from her dream - face-first. The creatures were fairies named Chypre and Coffret and, because of her dream, she was now chosen to become the latest "Pretty Cure". Tsubomi didn't understand a lick of this until another woman showed up - the Desert Apostle known as Sasorina. Having turned the down-trodden Erika into a Desertian, Tsubomi was forced to become a Pretty Cure, calling herself "Cure Blossom" and... spectacularly failing, being dubbed "The Weakest Pretty Cure Ever". However, she found herself rescued by a mysterious handsome stranger and would wake up, restored to normal, in her grandmother's greenhouse. There, Tsubomi learned that she was once a Pretty Cure (the greatest ever, Cure Flower) and that the odd creature always in the greenhouse was her fairy companion, Coupe. The Desertian's return, however, forced Tsubomi to confront it once more and finally defeat the beast, rescuing Erika. Through this, Tsubomi finally broke down and decided to try to be friends with Erika once more.

Soon after, it was revealed that Erika herself had the same dream Tsubomi had, thus making her material for being Pretty Cure. Initially, Erika turned it down, but seeing how cool it was (and that Tsubomi was in trouble), she took up the job and became Cure Marine. With the two united, the Heartcatch Pretty Cure team was born, facing down Sasorina and her Apostle companions, Cobraja and Kumojacky. During this time, Tsubomi met and fell head over heels for the Student Council President, Itsuki Myoudouin... which ended rather quickly when she learned Itsuki was a girl. However, when she became a Desertian, the two girls were able to rescue her, even though it meant Tsubomi doing so in her PJs. Their easy times came to an end when the demon-winged woman, the Dark Pretty Cure, returned and nearly killed them. This and many other encounters would prompt them to get stronger, especially after learning the identity of Cure Moonlight, Yuri Tsukikage, and why she can't fight anymore. Their fortunes would change with the birth of the third fairy, Potpourri, and his recruitment of Itsuki, turning her into Cure Sunshine.

Dark times were coming, though, and Kaoruko realized they weren't strong enough to face the coming evil. Gathering the three Cures and Yuri, Kaoruko lead them to the Pretty Cure Palace so they could take the test to see if they were worthy of holding the Heartcatch Mirage. Their opponent was the mysterious stranger that had saved Tsubomi and the others many times. Upon his defeat, Tsubomi found herself heartbroken again - the mysterious handsome stranger was Coupe in disguise! After obtaining the Heartcatch Mirage, their luck changed even more as, when the Desert Apostles and the Dark Pretty Cure appeared as one team, Yuri was able to face her past mistakes and return as Cure Moonlight, driving them off. The arrival of a Desert Devil on Earth forced the girls to take one last test to prove their worthiness - facing down the embodiment of their negative traits. While Yuri, Erika and Itsuki faced down and triumphed over their Mirages easily, Tsubomi had the most trouble, uncertain if she could change herself. At last, Tsubomi was able to go through it and unlock the full power of the Heartcatch Mirage. With their new power, the girls were able to defeat another attacking Desert Devil and, later on, purify Sasorina.

However, things would get tougher for the girls when the true evil attacking Earth, Dune, made his appearance. In short order, he defeated the team, kidnapped Kaoruko and regained his power, turning Earth into a desert by destroying the Great Heart Tree. Their failure nearly left the girls in despair, only to learn that those they had saved from being Desertians were also around and that they still had a chance. Taking the fight to Dune's fortress, Tsubomi and Yuri split up from Erika and Itsuki, rescuing Kaoruko and confronting the Dark Pretty Cure and Professor Sabaku, her creator. In the fight, Yuri and Tsubomi learned the truth of Sabaku - that he was her long lost father. With the Dark Pretty Cure regretfully killed, Dune returned and attempted to kill the three, only for Sabaku to take the shot and perish. Before Yuri could go into a Roaring Rampage of Revenge, Tsubomi was able to convince her to not fight with hate, but with love, reuniting Yuri's broken Precure Seed. Together, the two took the fight to Dune, aided by Itsuki and Erika. Despite their power, Dune was still too powerful and he threatened to smash the Earth with his own two fists, gloating that their love could never defeat his hate. Instead, using the power of the Heartcatch Mirage, the four fused into a powerful Pretty Cure, the Infinity Silhouette and, with a single punch, purified Dune and saved the Earth.

A few months later, Tsubomi would have returned to a simpiler life, this time as a big sister to boot.

Personality:Most Precure team leaders seem to have the same qualities: upbeat, chipper, full of energy and usually doing some majoy extracurricular activity. Tsubomi bucks the trend completely - that goes to her first friend, Erika. Instead, Tsubomi is much more passive in her actions. She's shy to a fault, quick to stammer and flail and otherwise is one to be somewhat of a wallflower. Her heart is in the right place and she genuinely wants to be there for others.

A lot of Tsubomi's quirks is due to the fact that she had been really parentless for most of her life. While her parents were off on their jobs, Tsubomi really clung to her grandmother and wasn't one to stand up for herself, not really making friends and considering flowers to be her real friends. It isn't until she got to Kibogahana that she's able to finally come out of her shell and make the friends she desperately wants.

For the most part, Tsubomi's taste in friends seem to be an odd thing. A lot of her friends, inside and outside of her Precure circle, have various quirks and she somehow is able to draw out the best of them. Going with her Precure teammates, she was able to calm down Erika to the point where she wasn't forceful, she was able to help Itsuki accept the fact that she can be strong without losing her feminity and help Yuri find the strength to keep going after such crushing defeats. Outside of that circle, Tsubomi's desire to grow and connect has latched on to others, helping them with their own problems.

An interesting thing about Tsubomi is that she doesn't seem to hold any grudges against anyone. She's willing to see the best in anyone and she doesn't like it when others try to harm other people. The one time she held a grudge, when she first met Erika and her energeticness turned her off towards her, Erika became a monster and she realized she messed up big time. This sort of thing boils down to what she told Yuri during the final fight with the villain Dune: "Fight with love." - don't attack with the intent on drawing blood or gaining vengeance.

Another quirk about her is her love for both flowers and fashion. Flowers is most likely her number one hobby as she spent her entire childhood tending to all sorts of flowers thanks to her living with her grandmother. This hobby has gotten to the point where she'll basically tick off things about flowers and she is quite knowledgable about the Language of Flowers, as she tended to point out what the flower a person's Heart Flower was and what it meant in that language. After bonding with Erika, Tsubomi was introduced to the world of fashion, leading her to be able to design and make her own clothes. However, where Erika could churn out designs like crazy, Tsubomi did things in her own pace.

In a fight, Tsubomi tends to hold back, mostly due to the fact that the monsters she fought beforehand were actually humans transformed. She seems more intent on either softening them up or trying to talk them down. However, when pushed to the limits, she'll easily drop the kid gloves and end the fight. Her crying out that "Her bag of tolerance has just snapped!" is an easy indicator to that.

Other:

As a normal human, Tsubomi... is quite weak. She has a FEW skills in martial arts, though being trained by a fellow student who learned his moves from TV doesn't really count. However, she IS knowledgable of flowers, so that's a plus.

However, as the Precure known as Cure Blossom, that's a whole different story. Through the use of the Heart Perfume and the Precure Seed held by her fairy partner Chypre, Tsubomi can become Cure Blossom. In that form, Tsubomi's strength, stamina and agility is increased to near superhuman levels, allowing her to fight monsters head on. Her main weapon is the Blossom Tact, a wand-like device that allows her to fire her ultimate attack, the Pink Forte Wave. Though the attack is usually seen as a purification attack - where it hits an enemy, ensnares them in an energy and, spinning a device on the Tact, purifies their heart, relaxing them in the process - it can also be fired as a normal energy attack.

As well, the Tact can be used to initiate a tag team attack known as the Floral Power Fortissimo, where her and her fellow Precure mark an F symbol in front of them, which glows with power and allow them to fly at their opponent (think of it like the Shine Spark attacks used by those like Samus Aran of the Metroid series or Getter Dragon of the Getter Robo anime series). Unlike the one performed by Yuri/Cure Moonlight, Tsubomi HAS to have a partner to perform this.

Interestingly, unlike other Precure outside of her series, Tsubomi has a whole list of secondary attacks as Cure Blossom. The Blossom Shower is a basic projectile attack that launches a cluster of energy flower petals; the Blossom Flower Storm, which Tsubomi spins around, surrounding herself in a tornado of energy petals; the Blossom Impact and Blossom Double Impact, where she can channel energy into her palms and release it as a burst of energy; the Blossom Screw Punch, where she charges up a Blossom Impact attack, then fires it as an energy blast; and her oddest attack, the Blossom Butt Punch, which she high-speed hip drops an opponent. Even she doesn't know why she called it that.

Her fairy partner, Chypre has a few powers herself. She's the one who holds Tsubomi's Precure Seed needed for transformation. As well, she can convert into the Cure Mantle, a pink energy cape that Tsubomi can wear as both her normal self and as Cure Blossom. As well, Chypre has a special lens that can peer into people's hearts and see their Heart Flower and the state its in.

First Person (entry type):

Mmm... you ever have those days where you wonder if what you've done is enough? I mean, I've been helping with my grandma on taking care of her plants in her greenhouse, but sometimes it seems like a lot of the plants don't want to be helped. I know, it's odd to think like that, but it's one of those moments where you just have to wonder...

...oh, why am I acting so melancholy? I have things planned and I can't exactly save everything right? That's how things are...!

Third Person:

Tsubomi hated to admit it, but it felt like her life had been tossed head over heels in confusion since she arrived in Kibogahana. The arrival, meeting Chypre and Coffret, becoming Cure Blossom and having her new friend Erika become Cure Marine was just the start. Between their first encounters with the Dark Precure and learning that Yuri, that softspoken and distant girl whose friends with Erika's older sister, was Cure Moonlight, the one in her dream... it was a little on the overwhelming side. Especially with how distant Yuri was.

Tsubomi, like everyone else, has taken to doing the same thing that others do when distraught - approach her grandmother's old fairy partner, Coupe, and hug him. As large and soft as he was, he certainly was a comforting sight.

"Coupe, do you think everything'll be okay? I mean... the Dark Precure's still out there and she's amazingly strong. And Yuri... I want to help her, but it feels like she doesn't want to be helped..." Tsubomi said as she looked up at the large fairy. For the most part, the creature just looked down, his stoic gaze now focusing on her. No response from him as usual, causing Tsubomi to sigh. "Things'll get better... I know they will... I just don't like feeling this helpless..."

Character Notes:
History: Itsuki is a young woman with a totally unreasonable set of expectations. Her family runs an aikido dojo, and her older brother Satsuki is in line to succeed it. However, Satsuki is chronically ill, and is too weak to actually train. So Itsuki offered, at a young age, to take his place as the heir to the family style. Of course, as a girl she can't do that, so she decided to cast away her femininity for her brother's sake, and since she was little she's been living as a boy, training to succeed the dojo. Years have passed with this arrangement, and she's now in the spring of her second year of middle school, where she's the charismatic student council president everyone adores. Through her position atop the student council, she met Erika Kurumi, would-be president of the Fashion Club, and her would-be lieutenant Tsubomi Hanasaki. She liked their energy, and approved the paperwork they brought her, but she didn't really pay a whole lot of attention to them.

It was around this time that weird things started to happen in Kibougahana: things get damaged and subsequently repaired as if by magic; massive monsters appear, complain about issues in their lives, and then disappear; and two girls known as the Precure, Cure Blossom and Cure Marine, have become the hottest thing. While she monitored the situation as best she could, she was a little busy trying to keep the school from falling apart without her (and under the weight of the Precure rumors), so she didn't have the time to investigate herself. She did, at around the time the girls brought their paperwork by, have an odd dream that she turned into a monster, screaming about her insecurities regarding having to succeed the dojo and live as someone she wasn't; it ended just as suddenly when she was saved by the Precure, and Itsuki found herself starting to wish, just a little, that she could be someone like that.

As spring turns to summer, Itsuki finds herself considering her feminine side again, and ends up consulting the Fashion Club for advice; she ends up working out a clothing design and chooses the colors and fabric that will go into it, which she takes home to look over, though she of course can't show it to her grandfather. The next day, Tsubomi and Erika come to visit to actually complete the design, and they're able to finish the top she'd designed that day, instructing Itsuki on how to help with the process, teaching her how to cut and sew. The end result is a yellow top with a sunflower motif, one she ends up loving to wear whenever she gets a chance. Her brother sees her in it, and comments it's a good fit, and is happy she's getting back in touch with the real Itsuki, but her grandfather seems to disapprove, and she reminds herself she can't like both cute things and martial arts; she'll have to choose one or the other.

Shortly thereafter, a challenger, Hiroto, comes to the dojo seeking to take on its master; Itsuki steps up to fight in her grandfather's place, and while she wins the match by the standard rules, Hiroto cheats, and soon has turned the tables, pulling a severely damaging blow and causing Itsuki's grandfather to declare him the winner lest he hurt Itsuki. As Hiroto walks away with the dojo's signboard as proof of his victory, he's attacked by Kumojacky, a soldier of the evil Desert Apostles, and his Heart Flower is stolen, turning him into a monster that proceeds to attack! Itsuki quickly finds herself on the outside of a Precure battle looking in, as Blossom and Marine appear on the scene and try to fight back, but they're overwhelmed when Kumojacky joins the fray himself; it falls to Itsuki to assist, and even without the super strength that being a Cure provides, she's able to cover Blossom and Marine long enough for them to get things back under control. That evening, Hiroto returns the sign, and Itsuki makes her decision: she'll work hard and change herself, to become someone that can like both martial arts and cute things. (This brings Itsuki up to her starting canon point.)

Late that summer, Itsuki's brother Satsuki is informed that there's a procedure with good odds of curing his condition, but he's wavering on whether or not to do it. Itsuki isn't really able to help him, and she can't figure out what to do with herself to keep from worrying; her mother ends up sharing her story with Tsubomi and Erika, who become worried for Itsuki in turn. While this is happening, a fairy named Potpourri visits Itsuki, and tells her she is destined to become the third Precure, but Itsuki tells him she won't really be able to help with her feelings the way they are, and Tsubomi and Erika find Itsuki to take Potpourri back home. The day of the procedure, Itsuki goes to visit her brother and finds he's missing, having been turned into a monster and made to destroy his surroundings. The Precure appear to fight the Desertrian, but they're pushed back. When everything seems grim, Itsuki's resolve to protect her brother strengthens enough that the Heart Perfume that Potpourri is carrying resonates with her heart, and Itsuki is able to become Cure Sunshine, the third Precure!

From this day, Itsuki uses her considerable power to help Tsubomi and Erika, and later Yuri, protect the people of Kibougahana from the attacks of the Desert Apostles in their quest to turn Earth into a desert. As the team continues to fight, they reach a plateau of power, and must eventually face shadows of themselves to gain new power to fight the forces of darkness. Sunshine Mirage confronts Itsuki about her having abandoned her dedication to her family's martial arts, or to the brother she so adores. While she's off-balance at first, Itsuki comes to realize that even if what the shadow of herself is saying sounds right on paper, it's not true - she's never stopped caring about those things, she just applies herself to them differently. After defeating her Mirage, she and the others gain the power of the Heartcatch Mirage, a magical item that grants them massive power so long as they're all together.

Itsuki quickly begins to realize that, while she likes being the leader of her fellow students, it's taking up time she could be using to save the world, and she announces she won't run for student council again next year so she can focus on her duties as Cure Sunshine. As winter approaches, the attacks of the Desert Apostles reach a pinnacle, and on Chrismas Eve, their leader makes an appearance on Earth: Dune. With amazing speed and power, Dune makes short work of the Precure and, while they're unconscious, succeeds in turning almost the entire world into a desert, the only safe place being the botanical garden Tsubomi's grandmother runs. From here, they launch their counterattack, heading into space to attack the enemy at the heart of their operations, in their base, the Castle Planet. After several hard fights, the team reaches Professor Sabaaku, the second-in-command of the operation, and Dark Precure, an amazingly powerful opponent. The two nearly manage to take the girls down, but Tsubomi and Yuri are able to rally and take care of things. It then falls to the girls to defeat Dune; they almost succeed, but he breaks away and takes on a final form the size of the Earth. The four girls combine their powers through the Heartcatch Mirage and take on a final form of their own, a girl with a flowing dress and galaxies reflected in her eyes, who delivers the final blow to Dune, restoring the world.

Personality: (Copied from an old application. Some of this is a little forward of where she'll be, but Itsuki's personality isn't well-expressed until she's part of the group.)

Itsuki is a natural leader, and it colors everything she does. She's very charismatic, and she loves contact with people; being the student council president was a way to use her talents that she'd enjoy, and for a while she was happy with that. Living the way she did, dressing and acting like a boy, was hard, but the knowledge that she was helping people saw her through. She lived her days as a lie, but what else could she do? Her self-assigned duty to her brother came first, even if it hurt.

That all changed when she met Tsubomi and Erika. Suddenly she wasn't just the leader of the dojo, or first among a council of equals. She was someone people wanted to be with and learn about, for herself. To Itsuki, that was huge, and she had no problem letting herself get caught up in their flow... perhaps too much so. It was a harsh wake-up call to realize that she couldn't let her mask fall away while still doing her duty to the dojo, or to the council. When her grandfather forced the issue and told her to seek herself before returning to serious training, she was lost for a while, trying to figure out what to do with herself. The combination of Potpourri's offer to become Cure Sunshine and seeing her brother being used for evil drove her to put herself to work as a protector, and that paradigm shift has driven her ever since. She believes wholeheartedly that everyone can be saved if you have the power, and her abilities as Cure Sunshine definitely fit the bill.

Itsuki is a girl of action. Once a course is decided, she's leading the charge, and knows exactly what the next steps are. She knows how to work with people to get things done, and she's willing to compromise to make people work together. She can keep her head in a crisis and is great at rallying groups. Should something go wrong, she's willing to stay behind and keep everyone safe until the crisis has passed or everyone's out, even at expense to herself. If she doesn't know how to solve a problem, either she'll find someone who does, or she'll do whatever seems right if she can't get help. When faced with something she knows she has no hope against, though, she'll be running too; she's more than capable of picking her battles.

She isn't particularly experienced in relationships of really any kind; she hasn't really had friends before she met Tsubomi and Erika, just colleagues, and as the heir to the Myoudouin style she couldn't really make friends with any of the disciples there. In more private settings she's still getting used to being around people, and at expressing herself candidly. Erika's Fashion Club is helping with that, too; Itsuki can stop being "the student council president" and just be herself around those girls, and she's thankful for that. She's been getting used to taking care of others via Potpourri, but he's a little too hyper to be much help.

Itsuki is intimately aware that she's in a weird place in her life; she's a middle school student, but the world is on her shoulders. The moment she took her Heart Perfume in hand she knew she wouldn't be able to just stop, and she lives every day since that moment ready for anything to happen. She knows she needs to take breaks, but even while she's laughing and enjoying time with her newfound friends, she's always ready for crisis, attacks, or disaster. It's a hard life, and she knows she's a little paranoid about it, but she's in it to save people, and that's the thought first and foremost on her mind. But if there weren't imminent destruction in her future... maybe, just maybe, she could relax and take a break. Until then, she continues to protect her city. There are too many things to lose to relax any time soon.

First Person:

I've got... kind of a weird question today, community. [Well, this is new. Itsuki looks a little nervous for once.]

Suppose you had two things to choose from. One of them's very important to you. You've dedicated your entire life to that one thing, to the exclusion of almost everything else. It's what you've lived for all this time. And the other thing... is something you gave up to make the first thing happen. You can't have the second thing back as long as you're pursuing the first one.

But... you're starting to miss having the second thing, but you don't want to give up the first one. [She shakes her head.] I'm sorry, this is a little confusing, but... what would you do? Keep pursuing the first thing and try not to think about what you're losing, or regain what you've lost but sacrifice the thing that's given your life direction?

Third Person:

Itsuki wasn't blind. She was quickly starting to realize there was something weird going on. All the weird times things were destroyed and were magically fixed five minutes later. The random monster attacks. And the pink and blue girls that never seemed to be around when Tsubomi and Erika were present, even if she'd just been with them when disaster struck. It made her suspicious. Granted, if she was right, she couldn't fault them; if everyone knew they were the Precure, there'd be an uproar. But... couldn't they at least tell her? So she wouldn't worry quite so much when they ran back into trouble?

And... wasn't there room for one more in their team? Someone else who desired to protect the things important to them?

She shook her head. No, best not to get ideas. She wasn't meant to be part of the Precure. She had enough on her plate as it is, even if she was starting to feel like she was doing things all wrong, lately. Satsuki needed her. There was no time for playing at being some kind of magical girl. Not now.

And yet, in the privacy of her own mind, she couldn't help but wonder what it'd be like. And, so unlike her, she daydreamed of battle, and being part of something bigger than her.

Fandom: Once Upon a Time

Character Notes:
Mr. Gold is the Storybrooke identity that was given to Rumplestiltskin by the curse that brought everyone from their land to rural Maine and wiped their memories. However, Mr. Gold has always remembered who he is and was. Because his real world identity is a fabrication, there is not much backstory for it, so most of the history section will deal with his fairy-tale-land self and the events that occurred in Storybrooke after Emma arrived and set time to moving correctly.

Part of this application includes parts of a previous app I wrote for Rumplestiltskin at Star Kingdom (that application is visible here in his character journal)

History:
Rumplestiltskin was born a mortal man. He lived in a rather humble village and worked as a spinner. Somewhere along the way he was married and had a single son, Baelfire. His wife was displeased at him for fleeing from a war and earning the reputation of a coward. She was eventually "stolen" away by pirates, and Rumple was too much of a coward to fight the pirate crew to save her. Believing his wife lost for good, Rumpelstiltskin raised his son alone as best he could. However, this was complicated by the rather dangerous and dire times that had engulfed the hamlet where he lived. War (against Ogres) had taken its toll on the land, and the army was so in need of soldiers that children were taken away from their families once they reached a certain age to fight on the front lines. Rumpelstiltskin's son was perilously close to this age, and he was terrified of losing him.

Years earlier, Rumpelstiltskin fled from a battle himself and earned a reputation of being a coward as a result. However, when his son was in danger, he planned to flee once more, this time with the boy, to protect Baelfire from having to fight (and likely die) in the war. However, before he could manage to flee, the soldiers found and threatened him, making a point to humiliate Rumpelstiltskin in front of his son. With nowhere else to turn, the old spinner was more than a bit distraught. On his way back to his village, however, he and his son met an old beggar who told them the source of the Duke's power -- a being called the Dark One. The leader of the soldiers called upon the Dark One to enforce his edicts with violence and magic. This terrifying being, the old man informed him, was controlled by a dagger in the Duke's possession. With this dagger, Rumpelstiltskin could control the Dark One and stop the reign of terror and -- most importantly -- save his son.

Armed with this knowledge and a desperation to keep Baelfire safe, Rumpelstiltskin broke into the Duke's castle and stole the dagger. He used it to summon the Dark One. However, the encounter went poorly, and Rumpelstiltskin was terrified of the creature, who taunted him about his cowardice and made insinuations that Rumpelstiltskin was not Baelfire's actual father. In a sudden fit of rage, Rumpelstiltskin stabbed the Dark One and was shocked to find that the creature was the same old beggar who told him of the dagger in the first place. The beggar was tired of living with this curse and tricked Rumpelstiltskin. In killing him with the cursed dagger, Rumpelstiltskin took the curse onto himself. It changed him -- in appearance and in personality. It gave him a sudden almost unimaginable power, which he used to destroy the soldiers, violently, much to the horror of his son. He also used this new found power to end the Ogre wars and save the children from the front lines, keeping Bae from having to fight.

But the darkness in him kept growing. His son began to despair about what his father had become. Bae made a wish and a deal with a faerie for a magical bean (the last of its kind) that would open a portal to a world without magic, where Rumplestiltskin would be free of his curse and the darkness it had brought over him. Rumplestiltskin agreed to go, but at the last moment his cowardice got the better of him and he hesitated too long. Baelfire was dragged to this other world and the portal closed with Rumple still on this side. He lost his son and immediately became frantic and regretful. But there was no way to reopen the portal.

Years later, Rumpelstiltskin had used his power to become a very well known and feared man. He was infamous for the deals that he made, promising (and delivering) people the things that they desperately wanted and needed -- at a price. Along the way he had had also met and mentored Regina, the woman who would become the Evil Queen, though it appeared that they had a falling out along the way. Through all his business, he had amassed quite a collection of interesting things and favors. He lived alone, however, and regularly spent his time spinning straw into gold, alone in a large estate.

This changed, however, when he was summoned to a kingdom that was overrun by ogres. They were desperately seeking a solution, and Rumpelstiltskin agreed to provide them with the protection they needed, but in exchange he demanded that the King's daughter, Belle, come and stay with him at his estate as its caretaker. Despite the protests of her father and fiance, Belle agreed and the deal was struck. Rumpelstiltskin took her back to his estate and she fell into her role as housekeeper. Slowly, the two became friendly with one another. Belle was not afraid of him, and they began talking and growing closer, something that Rumpelstiltskin was unsure how to deal with. More than that, an affection had begun to grow in him for Belle, a fact that he would not admit, likely even to himself. Finally, he told her to go to town -- her first time being allowed to leave his estate since the deal was struck -- to fetch him more straw to spin. He expected that she would not return, and in a way was choosing to grant her her freedom without explicitly saying it and breaking their deal.

He was surprised when she returned, and further surprised when she kissed him. This kiss, however, proved to be one of true love (one of the most powerful magics in existence) and it began to reverse the curse that he was under. He recoiled and pushed Belle away. In a fit of anger (and, in all honesty, fear) he locked her in the dungeon. He proclaimed that no one could ever love him, and that he didn't love her. He valued his power more. However, the sheer fact that the kiss was undoing his curse was proof enough that it was an action of true love, proving his feelings for her even if he denied them.

He sent Belle away, despite her warnings that he would spend the rest of his life alone with a heart full of regret. This proved to be very true, when not long after, the (evil) Queen arrived and cruelly informed Rumpelstiltskin that Belle's father had believed Belle to be corrupted by her time with Rumpelstiltskin, had locked her in a tower, had her cleansed by clerics and their scourges, the treatment eventually driving Belle to leap from the tower and to her death. Rumpelstiltskin sent the Queen away and was grief stricken, clinging to the sole memento of his time with Belle, a small teacup that she had chipped.

Life went on, however, and Rumpelstiltskin, feared monster that he was, continued making his deals. Many of these seemed to be interconnected. In particular, he became involved in the fate of Snow White and Prince Charming as well as the Evil Queen. His deals with Snow and Charming led to his ability to bottle the magic of true love. His dealing with the Queen led to the curse that plunged the fairytale world into mostly magicless real world of Storybrooke. (It was later revealed that Rumpelstiltskin's Storybrooke counterpart is one of the few who retained his memories of his life as Rumpelstiltskin, and had designed the curse as a way to get to the world where Bae had disappeared). He also provided Snow and Charming with the "solution" to the curse, telling them that their then-unborn child would be the savior who could break this curse. His price for this information was the baby's name -- Emma.

Once in Storybrooke, Rumplestiltskin's identity changed as everyone else's did. He became Mr. Gold, a wealthy and rather ruthless businessman. He ran a pawnshop, suspiciously full of trinkets from the other citizens of Storybrooke's lives. He also seemed to hold the lease to many of the properties in town, a fact that became apparent when he went about town looking for answers to questions and instead was met with repeated insistences of "the rent isn't due yet!" Later he reveleaed that he was also a lawyer and represented Mary Margaret when she was suspected of murder.

When Emma first arrived in Storybrooke, Mr. Gold encountered her and asked her name. At the answer, he seemed far too pleased. Bit by bit he revealed himself as both ally to Emma and a villain. He helped her win election as sheriff when running against the mayor's minion. But this help was rather twisted. He lit a fire that trapped the mayor so that Emma could save her. Emma found out he was behind it and turned him away and admitted the truth to the town, expecting to lose the election because of it. Instead, she won. This was what Gold had planned all along, in that standing up to him was one way that Emma could prove herself a capable and strong enough sheriff. Bit by bit he turned out to be a force of opposition to the Mayor (Regina, who was the evil queen who had cast the curse) and incurred her wrath.

In one instance, she went after him by prompting Moe (in his previous life, Belle's father) to steal from him. Though most of his property was recovered, one trinket was missing and it sent Gold into an absolute rage. It was the teacup that Belle had chipped in their lives in the fairytale world, his last remembrance of her. After beating Moe near to death to find out where it was, he landed himself in jail. Regina visited then and admitted she had the cup. Before she would give it back to him, she insisted that he tell her his name. And with barely contained rage he answered that his name was Rumplestiltskin, admitting that he had remembered his true memories. From then on he continued his machinations to ensure that the curse would be broken, sometimes seemingly allying with Regina, only to double cross her.

When Emma finally began believing in the magic and the truth of Storybrooke, he provided her with her father's sword to do battle with a dragon to recover a potion that could save Henry from a sleeping spell that was killing him. Shortly after, Belle walked into his shop. All this time in Storybrooke, she had been hidden and locked away by Regina. She had no memories of her previous life, but she had been set free and told to find Mr. Gold.

Shortly after this, the curse broke entirely and everyone regained their memories. Gold admitted to Belle that he loved her, and then insisted he had something important to do. Using the true love potion, he set a cloud of magic over the town to regain his power. Bit by bit his relationship with Belle began to grow strained. He tried to send her away because he realized that even if she hoped he would, he couldn't change from the monster that he was. But she insisted that was why she had to stay. Later she changed her mind after finding out that he was practicing magic more and more. Realizing that he was going to lose her for real this time, he felt that he at least owed her the truth. He explained how he had lost Baelfire and that he was a coward still, that he felt he needed the magic, the power. And that he was trying to find a way to his son -- tricky since he still couldn't leave Storybrooke without losing all memories of his true life.

Personality:
The two sides of his identity, Mr. Gold and Rumplestiltskin are very very different. But the uniting factor in both is that both are largely masks that he wears to deflect the majority of the world. To hide. Gold is a coward and always has been, a fact that he eventually admits to himself (and to those closest to him), but that he has, as of yet, been unable to change. He cloaks himself in power and viciousness and is always grasping for more power, more strength.

Because his two personas are so different on the surface, it's important to understand both.

Rumplestiltskin

Rumpelstiltskin is an imp. At first glance, he seems largely mischievous. He is quick to laughter and tends to treat life a bit like a game that he is playing. However, this mischief is a thin veneer that does little to hide his much darker, more sinister self. He has become a much-feared monster for good reasons. His motivations are his own, and he does not hesitate in taking actions that would cause other people pain and suffering or death if it happens to be in his own best interest. He can be cruel and vicious, as shown in his treatment of the soldiers who had tormented him before he gained the Dark One's curse. He also has an intense hatred for fairies, and seems to genuinely enjoy killing them whenever possible. It's an odd hobby, but like most of the things that he does, it has a deeper reasoning to it.

One of the main things that Rumpelstiltskin is associated with are his deals -- many of which are double edged swords. His half of the deal always delivers, but sometimes with consequences that were not anticipated by the person who sought them out. For example, the memory potion he gave to Snow White so that she could forget her love for Charming did more than just remove the prince from her memory. It took all her capability to love from her, turning her into a cruel and hard person -- something that conveniently enough played into Rumpelstiltskin's later plans of having Charming save her and eventually using a small piece of the two lovers to finally bottle true love as a potion. This careful plotting that extends far out into the future is another of his main characteristics. He is a schemer who chooses his actions and his prices quite carefully. Even if he pretends to be an impish, manic creature, he does not make his decisions rashly. In fact, he has blatantly taken advantage of those who do not think things through quite so carefully. When Cinderella was desperate to leave behind the life of abuse at the hands of her stepmother, he makes her a deal about claiming his price at a later date, once she has become a princess. She agrees without asking further details, assuming he'll want money or jewels. In fact, his price turns out to be her first born child. His schemes are very carefully mapped out.

However, there is an exception to this. When he is angry, Rumpelstiltskin's judgment and careful planning seems to go straight out the window. He has shown himself to be prone to fits of temper -- though this does seem to be a rarity and is almost always connected to those he genuinely loves. First, his rash action in stabbing the original Dark One after goading about his son and later when he smashes and breaks so many things in his home after learning of Belle's fate from the Queen.

Despite his viciousness and violence, Rumpelstiltskin is capable of caring deeply for people, even after becoming the creature that he is. This is clearest in his relationship with Belle. The fact that her kiss was beginning to reverse his curse before he pushed her away is proof that the love between them was real, and in particular from his end of the equation. (We learn later when Charming tries to save the amnesiac Snow with true love's kiss, it fails at first because she no longer remembers her love for him, regardless of how much he still loves her.) Rumpelstiltskin was also willing to let Belle out of her deal, sending her into town with the expectation that she would not return to him -- quite surprised when she actually did.

Underneath Rumpelstiltskin's outward personality, there appears to be a deep sadness and loss -- all centered around the loss of his son. Bae has been taken from his life, however, he still keeps his son's clothes in a room at his estate, and when Belle asks, he refuses to speak about them. He seems unable to really confront his past, and he holds onto his pain like it is as much a shield as anything. But there is good reason for this. Getting Baelfire back is his primary mission in life.

Rumpelstiltskin seems nearly addicted to making his deals. At one point, it is his desire for making them that leads to his being captured and imprisoned. However, based on the way things unfold, this is part of his plans. He is not only addicted to dealing, he is also apparently addicted to power. Most of his decisions seem to be a way for him to obtain more or keep his current power. Even in turning Belle away, he was clinging to his curse and his power. Part of his is because, even with as powerful as he has become, Rumpelstiltskin is still a coward deep down. He is still the same frightened man he has always been. He fears being hurt -- physically as well as emotionally. He insists that no one could love him, but it seems more than he is too afraid to take the risk that letting love in could be. There may well be good reason for this. In the past, his wife left him to run off with pirates because she didn't love him anymore. Later, in a fit of anger, he kills her when he finds this out and lops the hand off her new lover. His anger is often suppressed, but it escapes in violent outbursts.

Also suppressed and hidden deep inside himself is a vulnerability that he does not want to let anyone see. Mostly it is centered around his son and later around Belle. When he finds out her fate from Regina, there's an almost hopeful moment when he asks if Belle needs a home, sounding like he's quite ready to offer her one, despite his turning her away in the first place. When Regina tells him that Belle is "dead" he turns her away. His anger is the first thing that shows itself, a fit of smashing and breaking. But he also finds the little tea cup that Belle chipped and sets it very delicately in a spot he can see it, where it will be safe. Later, when dealing with Charming, he mentions that he was in love once and when asked what happened to her is very plain to say that she died, and for that moment, there's a flash of this same vulnerability.

Mr. Gold

First and foremost, Mr. Gold is Rumplestiltskin. They are one in the same. He has never forgotten his former life, always retained each and every memory of the fairy tale world even as the rest of the town has forgotten who they truly are. But even if they are the same person, Mr. Gold acts quite differently from Rumplestiltskin in many ways. First of all, Mr. Gold is a calm and collected businessman. He seldom shows any emotion much more intense than annoyance. He's very level and acts like he is aware of the way things will transpire, and often times he is. He is the one who pulls the strings, who sets things in motion and then sits back to watch them unfurl. He seldom gets his own hands dirty, at least in any way that is traceable back to him without at least some wiggle room for deniability. This is also how he operated as Rumplestiltskin. But Gold is a much more subdued and soft-spoken man than Rumplestiltskin was. They tend to do the same things in many respects, but their demeanor is the difference.

Where Rumplestiltskin is the type for grand gestures and flourishes and a bit of prancing from time to time, Gold is very self-contained. He seldom reacts to anything, at least when he is prepared for it. He is not nearly so quick to laugh as he was as Rumplestiltskin. In fact, even his smiles a great deal more subdued. Physically, he moves a great deal differently too -- partially because once the curse is lifted, his injury comes back and he limps and requires a cane. Mr. Gold is usually polite, though there's certainly an edge to nearly everything that he says or does. Much like the entire fairy tale realm was, the entire town of Storybrooke is wary and a bit afraid of him. He uses this fact to his advantage, in many ways "ruling" over the populace just as much as Regina, if not more so. He holds the lease over most buildings and it seems that a number of people owe him things, including Emma who has promised him a favor that he has not yet collected on, and that he does not like to let her forget that she owes him.

Anger is not something that Gold shows very often, but when he does, it is violent and explosive, another trait that he shares entirely with Rumplestiltskin. Usually Gold levels out at vaguely annoyed and walks away from situations with a threat or a bit of coercion, but when something dear to him is involved, things change. When Moe stole the teacup from him, he exploded in a rage and nearly beat the man to death. His emotions are below the surface more often than not, but they are also roiling, just waiting for the opportunity to be let loose and boil over.

Even as Gold there is a vulnerability in him, one that comes out in unplanned moments. When Belle reappears, there's a moment where Gold is struck absolutely silent by the sight of her. Even if she doesn't remember him, he pulls her into a hug and looks like he's on the verge of something like tears. He also finally admits that he loves her when when she remembers who she is.

However this love is not enough to stop him from his usual ways, secretive and scheming. It causes a rift between him and Belle, one that he seems incapable of mending. He twists words and makes promises that he keeps only technically (for example, he promised Belle he wouldn't kill Regina, so instead he marks her with a symbol that will draw a wraith to her, and the wraith will be the one to kill her. He considers this a promise kept, though Belle begs to differ). He admits to her that though she may hope otherwise, he is a monster and likely always will be. But still, when she disappears, he seeks out Charming/David for help and is sincerely concerned about her, something that David picks up on. He's willing to do anything he can to find her and save her, but when he does and she decides to leave him anyway because of the secrets and lies and his thirst for power, he realizes that he's losing her again. This revelation awakens a fear in him, the idea of losing Belle completely without ever telling her the truth, it's enough to prompt him into actually opening up to her. He finally tells her about himself, admits his own cowardice and tells her about Baelfire and how he's trying to find a way back to him. Though they don't necessarily kiss and make up, this display of honesty, genuine honesty, earns him at least a chance. And he's visibly grateful for it.

Gold is mostly interested in his own plans and plots and seems to help those around him more as a means to an end than any desire to really change their lives one way or another. An exception to this is the genuine animosity that he harbors towards Regina, especially after finding out that she has kept Belle hidden and imprisoned all these years.

In conclusion, whatever you choose to call him, Gold is a man who hides his true self beneath one veneer or another. His motivations he keeps close to the chest, only barely opening up to the very few he trusts or to those he needs to because they are useful for what he needs to accomplish. There is a deep and dark anger in him (only some of which can be attributed to darkness of the curse that he is under) that is fed by fear. He is terrified of becoming the simpering, cowering man that he used to be. But more than that terror is the fear of losing the few things left in life that he genuinely cares for and loves, namely Belle and Baelfire.

He is a liar and he twists words like it's an art form, and his deals are never quite as fair as they seem. But he's not necessarily the villain. Sometimes certainly he plays that role, but at other times, he is an unlikely ally, and a strong one at that. He always seems to be a few steps ahead of the game, his plans far-reaching and complex and often interconnected, a bit like the strands of a spider's web. He is a man driven by purpose, though he sometimes gets caught up in his own thirst for power and his continuing cowardice. But bit by bit he is learning and changing, largely thanks to Belle and her influence on him.

Other:
Rumplestiltskin possesses a great deal of magic due to the curse that he is under. He can conjure any number of things, enchant objects, craft curses, brew potions. In Storybrooke however, magic has not existed until very recently in current canon. Once magic is brought back, Gold's magic is returned to him and he's quick to make use of it.

First Person (entry type):
[Gold's eyes are focused on something on the counter in front of him, invisible to the camera. But he's aware the video feed is on, even if he didn't necessarily plan it.] So then, this charming little network doesn't respect normal business hours, does it? No manners at all. But then it seems to me that I've been neglecting this useful little tool here anyway. That won't do, at all. When something so fascinating falls into your lap, it's a sin to let it languish unused.

So many people so many worlds. I'm sure you all have your stories. And I do love a good story. [A faint smile, twitch of his lips and little more.]

But no true deal can be solely one-sided, can it? So let's start with this. I'll share a story or two as as well, and you'll tell me a bit about you and the places you come from. What are they like? Is there technology or are things more... magical? [Don't mind the faint glint in his eyes at that word.]

It's not really too much to ask is it? Certainly you'll humor an old man his idle curiosities.

In the end, maybe we'll all learn a little something.

Third Person:
Gold's cane thumped against the floor loudly with each step. There was a clipped, sharp edge to each step he took, agitation plain in the tenseness of his posture, the thin line that his lips had pressed to. Frustration. He'd never been exceptionally good at dealing with being frustrated, with seeing his plans waylaid or thwarted. It made the anger in him swell, pushing him closer to that precarious little cliff, the other side of which tended to lead to a free fall of violence, of smashing and breaking, object and person, property and soul. For now though it was contained. But that couldn't last, not if he continued to come up short. Again and again.

He limped along the long back shelf of his store, eyes roaming over the trinkets that filled it. Bits and pieces of so many lives -- a doll, a wind chime, a pick axe, a well-worn book. Maybe it was strange that he had filled his store, filled this life with reminders and remembrances of a world he'd left behind, of a world they'd all left behind. After all, these weren't his keepsakes. They were pieces of other people's lives, forgotten and then remembered. But they were his. In this world, in this town, they belonged to him, these fragments of other's memories. He had little use for them, most of them. Some of them had come in quite handy: the magic book, the old sword. But he didn't keep them because of their use so much as what they represented.

This town. These people. That they were here at all was his doing, though the blame still fell to Regina. That, of course, had been by design. No sense taking the blame and facing the wrath of a population displaced and stripped of their true selves. No, that was far too much vitriol and anger to properly deal with. He had more important things to worry about. He had places to go.

Except now he was trapped. Trapped. He tapped the cane hard against the floor, frowning to himself as he looked to the small globe atop his counter. Twenty eight years he'd been unable to leave this town. Twenty eight years biding his time, waiting for the savior to finally show up. Longer still while the stubborn, willful thing refused to consider believing. But the curse was broken.

And still he was trapped. Fingers tightened at the handle of his cane, enough that his knuckles blanched from it. His free hand lifted a book from the shelf, a small almanac, a travel guide.

Years and years and years and he was kept from the one thing that mattered, unable to correct the one deal he hadn't kept, the worst mistake he'd made. There was a shift in his expression then, faint, barely visible. A furrowing of brows, a tighter press of his lips together. His eyes darkened, as though the sudden rise of rage were singeing them darker. No warning came before he moved. With a wordless sound, he hurled the book at the counter. Glass shattered, falling to a pile along with the bits and trinkets of jewelry that had been inside, shattered glass glittering like the silver and gold and gems that lay among it. Gold straightened up then, sighing. A deep breath, a moment to draw the rage back. No, this would do no good. It wasn't over yet. There were other options. He just had to find them. There were always other options, methods unused, routes as of yet unexplored.

The small bell at the top of the front door chimed out as the door was pushed open. Glancing from the broken glass towards it, stepped around the pile of shattered and jagged pieces. "What can I do for you? Please, mind the glass. There was a bit of an accident."
