Character: Robert Fischer Fandom: Inception Character Notes: Note, I left out the end of the movie due to spoilers. However, there is not much at all about Robert to discuss. The movie never says anything about his past nor his future. History: ⤷ Son of Maurice Fischer, head of Fischer Morrow the sole energy provider of the entire world. ⤷ His mother died when he was 11. ⤷ He is the Mark. A rival wishes to plant the idea in Robert's head to dissolve the monopoly and allow others to take free reign. ⤷ When Maurice dies, bringing Robert to his deathbed only to utter the word "disappointment". ⤷ He meets up with the rest of the crew on a flight to L.A.
Personality: Robert is a man that wishes to make his father happy. Of course, their relationship has always been strained. His father owned the world in his fingertips and yet he could never give a moment to his son. When his son did manage to get his attention, he was always very disappointed. Needless to say, Robert has grown up his entire life people telling him what he can or cannot do, where he can or can't go and that is by people whom his father hired. His father issues are so deep that the extractors are able to use this to manipulate Robert into conceiving an idea.
Robert has been given wealth, he knows this and sometimes the entire thing exasperates him; he's spoiled, but he's still social. Despite wanting to become his father (a very strong desire to), he became this weaker person that would rather be a doormat and gullible than be himself or anyone else for that matter. There's a point in the movie where he's seen getting mugged and he's just "Oh really? This is what's going on. Here mug me and please take me to my stop." He's clueless to the world and to who his father's competitors are. When he passes Saito in a dream, he doesn't even know that this is a man who is powerful. He's been sheltered, but not too sheltered. He knows how to do business, but it's not his style. It's just a mimic of his father's.
The key difference is that while his father is reserved and stoic (he told his own son on his mother's funeral that "There really wasn't much to say"), Robert is a lot more open about his emotions. He's bitter, yes, but he thaws quickly and lets people in. After all, it's not him they're interested in and his feeling or his place on anything can't be used against the company.
Oh this is just wonderful - in fact it's just fantastic.
You would think that having all these people paid to ensure that something like this doesn't happen to our network. No, it just means that they have better access to our mainframe; I don't know whether to laugh from amusement or mirth.
In the end, isn't this just another person telling me what to do? Or are you just really, really bored internet junkies - it doesn't matter. Look, my personal information isn't even on this network and don't think I'm stupid enough to buy stuff off of Ebay or even glance at Craig's list. You really should know that people are paid to do these things for me.
Third Person:
The weather today is horrible. It's the bleakest day in Hong Kong. Everything is backed up: traffic is barely moving, there are delays all over and there's nothing anyone can do about it. In his own luxury driven car, Robert is sitting back on the phone with someone who is informing him that his father thinks things are too slow. There's an urge to throw it out of the window or just hang up and blame the weather for it. But, like a masochist, he has to know what Maurice is saying about him.
"Well," he snaps, obviously disappointed that it's not something positive, "When we're able to control the weather, inform me. But, until then there's nothing I can do about it."
He pauses, actually thinking that the person on the other line will actually tell him that they had developed a new machine to harness the weather for energy. It's a silly thing, but it's always unsurprising that he'd be the last person to know. Robert rolls his eyes at the response he's getting. Of course that's not what they're going to tell Maurice. Maurice would probably get some watered down version saying "due to unexpected delays, Robert is not being as punctual as he could be" or "there were unforeseen circumstances and there has been a delay". Either way, Robert figures, he's going to be blamed for not taking the weather in consideration.
It's going to be at least another hour till he gets to one of their hotels and then business might as well be cancelled for the day. Then tomorrow can be another day for him to work as hard as he possibly can and for his father not to acknowledge it.
