Character: Pele Fandom: Hawaiian Mythology Character Notes: History: (As a note, there's about four or five different stories dealing with the birth of the Pele and her family, giving varying sets of parents and siblings, so for simplicity I'll be going with the most common version.)
Born of the goddess Haumea and the god Moemoe, it's important to note that Pele, Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes (as well as fire, lightning, dance, and violence) wasn't even native born to the land of Hawai'i. She originally hailed from Tahiti, born in the land of Honua-Mea. Known to be a rather restless bunch, Pele and her siblings were known as the first to leave their home in search of new unexplored lands to live.
Wanderlust only seems to be an excuse, though. In reality Pele had actually been chased away from home by her older sister, the ocean goddess Na-maka-o-kaha'i, who had been in a jealous rage over finding Pele had seduced and stolen away her husband. Once they had reached the Hawaiian islands, Pele first attempted to make a home by digging out a fire pit on the island of Kaua'i. Unfortunately, her sister had followed her the entire way, completely hellbent on getting revenge for what had happened back in Tahiti, and once Na-maka found her on Kaua'i she made the waves rise high enough to completely flood the pit Pele had dug, hoping to drown her. Pele escaped, moved onto the next island, and tried again, only to have Na-maka follow in suit to flood that pit as well. The chase continued all down the island chain, and eventually Pele found refuge in the fire pit of Halema'uma'u on Mt. Kilauea, which even her sister's waves could not reach. The volcano summit has been her home ever since, and she still safely mocks her older sister from it to this day. (Fun Fact: Kilauea also happens to currently be the world's most active volcano, lava flows happening pretty regularly.)
Since then, she's had many adventures exploring her new domain, constantly traveling from island to island, and often with a sibling or two in tow. Many of these ventures involve collecting lovers in the various unsuspecting men she comes across, and all too often end with killing those same lovers in fits of jealousy. One well known case is when Pele caught sight of a Kaua'i cheif, who she asked her youngest sister Hi'iaka to bring to the Big Island for her. When Hi'iaka took too long to deliver him, Pele immediately thought she had been betrayed and destroyed Hi'iaka's favorite forest. After finding out what her sister had done, Hi'iaka embraced the young cheif out of spite, and Pele sent lava on them both, killing the mortal man in the process. Another incident involved the snow goddess Poliahu; Pele seduced and won over a man Poliahu had previously claimed, and the snow goddess then attacked them with cold, which once again killed the poor mortal caught in the middle.
Pele didn't only get involved with mortals, however. She also has a long standing history with Kamapua'a, the boar-like god of rainfall. The two have always been in a constant struggle over control of the land, Pele destroying the land with her lava only for Kamapua'a to put her fires out and create new forests in its place. Kamapua'a eventually began attempts to woo her. Pele responded with insults and further destruction. It was only after her brothers begged her to stop the fighting that she decided to take the god as a lover, though conflict between the two continued even after they decided to keep to separate sides of the island. They had a son together, considered to be the ancestor of all chiefs. But as happens with every lover she takes, they didn't last. One day Kamapua'a finally up and left Hawai'i, and headed back to his own island home to be with his family instead. Pele truly had fallen in love with him, and she sang and danced for ages to try and call him back to her. It didn't work, and it was about that time she finally gave up on love altogether.
Personality: As you could probably tell from her history, Pele is something of a bitch. Spiteful, vindictive, unnecessarily cruel and the very definition of a spitfire personality. She's quick to anger, difficult to truly placate, easily falls in fits of jealousy and becomes dangerously violent at the smallest provacations. She is also horribly possesive of anything she deems as hers, be it lovers, her family, or her land. Especially her land. In her eyes, she made it, and she can just as easily take it right back. The lava flows are proof enough of that.
If she sees something she wants? She will get it. No matter what. If she has to lie or flirt or throw innocent charm around like confetti, she will, and she'll continue to until she has the object of her desire. If she doesn't, she'll get violent, and then bad horrible things will happen from then on out.
She is highly competitive as well, once challenging a well known sleding champion to a race down the mountain side. He turned her down, refusing to race a woman, and enraged at being spurned Pele sent a torrent of fire and lava toward him. Luckily, he was able to outrun the attack and escaped into the ocean, one of the lucky few to ever survive her wrath.
However, on the other side of the coin, she can, surprisingly, be quite caring and gentle. She's a giver as much as she is a destroyer, always creating new land to replace everything lost in her moments of fury. She can also be very loving and serene to those she's close to. Case in point: her baby sister, Hi'iaka. A fellow goddess of dance and her favorite sibling by far, Pele carried the egg that held Hi'iaka with her on their journey to Hawai'i, and cared for and raised her once they had reached the islands. Even though Pele had once lost her temper with her in the event with the cheif from Kaua'i, she honestly regreted her actions, something almost unheard of from her. Pele also holds great respect for her elders, especially for her older brother Ka-moho-ali'i, shark god and holder of the water of life.
Unsurprisingly, Pele also bores quite easily, and constantly leaves her home in the crater to gallivant up and down the island chain as she pleases. She loves her booze, loves her dancing, and owns a large white dog that appears to have no real name. She has a talent for shapechanging, often appearing as anything from her usual form of a young woman to a large ball of flame. Urban legends also have it that she enjoys playing occasional games with the mortals she comes across, and will take the guise of an old woman and approach them for favors. If the person is kind and helpful, they gain her blessing and good fortune follows. If they don't....well, it kinda sucks to be them, that's all I'm saying.
Other: If accepted, she'll remember her previous time on the community and I'll be taking her from there.

I swear it on every star in our father's sky, I will hunt down that smug son of a pig and I will rain goddamn hellfire on his worthless hide if he steps one hairy foot back here, so help me.
....ugh. I need to calm down. Just calm down....
....I can't believe I actually said that to him....not to parrot Laka or anything, but what the hell was I thinking? Ka-moho-ali'i....I've never snapped at him like that before. I know he was only looking out for my well being, but, well....
.... Hn. This isn't any of his business, anyway. Stopping me from burning down that asshole's forest like that....this is my land, dammit, I created every inch of it and I can damn well take it back if I so wanted. Gods....I need to go kill something. I'm going to find Laka again. Kapo's coming with me to do some boar hunting, whether she likes it or not.
Third Person:
It was a beautiful day.
Or, it had been. Before the clouds rolled in and blacked out the sky. Before they opened up and released a heavy downpour of warm winter rain across the rocky landscape. Yet there she was, standing alone on the beach, completely soaked to the bone.
She was loving every moment of it.
Pele took a deep breath, taking in the smell of the wet earth mixing with the salty scent of the sea. She loved the storms this season brought. They were far too breif for her liking, but they were powerful. The shotgun blast of thunder, the jagged spikes of lightning. Completely unpredicatable, wild, and untamed. So much like herself. She could sit out there and watch it pass overhead for hours. But they rarely lasted so long. Some several minutes at most, so she enjoyed it while she could, the glassy shards of black sand crunching beneath her feet as she danced across the beach. She dipped and spun with the lightning flashes, feet moving in time to drums only she could hear, and for a short moment Pele almost regreted that Laka and Hi'iaka didn't share her love. If only they could be out there with her, dancing at her side just like in olden times, maybe they'd understand the unadulterated joy she felt....
Another thunder crash rolled across the sky, and she found herself laughing, her movement picking up the pace as the wind whipped up around her. This was the true beauty of the islands, she thought. It's brief moments of harsh, uncontrolled chaos. This was the kind of power she thrived on.
