Character: Theodore "Teddy" Altman, aka Hulkling, aka Dorrek VIII
Fandom: Marvel's Young Avengers
Character Notes: ***FULL OF SPOILERY SPOILERS***
History:
* Teddy is the son of Captain Marvel, a Kree (alien), and the daughter of the Skrull (also alien) Emperor, Princess Anelle, and he was originally named Dorrek VIII (following a tradition in the Skrull ruling family of apparently naming their children the dorkiest thing possible). This happened during a war between the two alien species, which are mortal enemies going way back. Understandably, the child born of this particular union was marked for death and his mother sent him off to Earth to be hidden before promptly dying. Captain Marvel also died. Teddy doesn't know any of this at the point I'm pulling him from, so what follows is the history he DOES know.

* Teddy's father died of cancer before he was born, and he was raised by his single mother, who took very good care of him. He discovered his abilities of shape-shifting at some point pre-series in high school, and abused them to make himself fit in with the jocks at his school (that is, he bulked up without the benefit of muscle milk). At this point, he met a guy named Greg who became his best friend by merit of the fact he could shape-change into famous people and get away with nasty things because of it. Teddy stopped cooperating about the time this game involved stealing things from the ruins of the Avengers mansion, because he grew up a massive fanboy of the Avengers, and nerds of his calibre don't appreciate stealing from their heroes.

* Recently, things have taken a change which, to Teddy, is pretty bizarrely amazing. He met up with a guy from the future, Iron Lad aka Nate aka young Kang the Conqueror, who claims to be a time traveller with a plan to assemble a new team of Avengers that all have some kind of ties to the original Avengers. He doesn't know what the heck his connection is (note: the connection would be that whole Captain Marvel bit) but he's interested in finding out, and in the meantime, being a wannabe-Avenger is just fascinating enough to make him keep doing it.

* He's developed a close friendship with fellow Young Avenger, Billy Kaplan aka Wiccan. Pretty close. Really close. Okay. It's kind of gay, and they're kind of boyfriends.

Personality:

Strengths

* Teddy is altruistic and dutiful, two traits that lend themselves to Teddy's chosen path as a superhero. He believes in doing the morally right thing, and he will go all out to make sure he accomplishes this goal. His highly-focused moral compass helps him to make the choices he feels are right in even complicated situations. He is also very brave, courageously facing frightening situations in order to do what he feels is right. Fortunately, he is also resilient, managing to carry on despite various extremely traumatic events - perhaps not overcoming them completely, but not letting them cripple him.

* Teddy is affectionate and loyal with the people around him, willing to do whatever it takes to support and protect the ones he cares about. This is noticeable with his teammates, particularly with his future boyfriend, Billy, who he risks death for on many occasions and never gives up on, even when others consider him dangerous.

* Teddy is confident and not at all self-conscious, remaining true to who he is without fear. He is very set in what and who he believes in, and who he is as a person, and won't allow negativity from others to get in his way. He has shown this on many occasions, including refusing to quit being a superhero despite being told to by a childhood hero and being open about his homosexuality, standing up for himself when harassed for it.

* Teddy is intelligent - despite his position as the team tank, and his jockish appearance, he defies both stereotypes and avoids being dumbed down or needing to be lead around by the nose. He's quick-witted and snappy, and has a very good vocabulary. He may be blond and sport a football player's build, but he's actually kind of a nerd.

Weaknesses

* Teddy's determination and dutiful personality often leaks over into stubbornness and rebellion. He can be incredibly hard-headed when he decides something, even if it isn't good in the long run. For example, he was unwilling to give up his teammates and boyfriend on Earth in order to attempt to put an end to the Skrull/Kree war, which has been raging for centuries.

* His loyalty and protective nature can occasionally become bullish overprotectiveness. While he generally lets people make their own decisions, if he feels that something has gone on long enough or isn't being done in a way he approves of, he can be very forceful about imposing his way of doing things.

* Teddy's courage can quickly become impusiveness and recklessness - he can occasionally thrust himself into conflicts that are very obviously over his head and make impulsive snap decisions without thinking things through clearly. For example, in canon he has, on various occasions, directly threatened Captain America, Iron Man, Wolverine, Magneto, Quicksilver, and various others - most of whom could crush him easily. This isn't helped by the fact that his quick wits are often expressed as snarky sharp words, and he can come off as a bit of a smart-mouth when disagreeing with his elders.

Other:

* I'll be playing Teddy through his canon from the point at which the first book starts.

* Teddy is a shape-shifter, so he can be pretty much anything he wants to be, but this (http://images.wikia.com/marveldatabase/images/f/fa/Young_Avengers_Presents_Vol_1_2_Textless.jpg) is his most frequently used "fighting form" or "super hero form," Hulkling, and this (http://images-mediawiki-sites.thefullwiki.org/00/2/4/4/53733803411408246.jpg) is his genuine default form (or this (http://shehulk.sliverofice.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/hulkling03.jpg) if you want to see him in utmost nerd attire), which is human-looking. Or Kree-looking. Whatever. Kree look like humans anyway.

* His official list of abilities includes shape-shifting (with seemingly no limit on size), super-strength, and fast healing (though not to the level of Wolverine or anything, he's been shown to survive being shanked and shot several times). His super healing includes some sort of failsafe self-protection that allowed him to survive a vivisection (dissection), and the scientist doing it said his organs moved around to avoid the knife. Boy's resilient, though he said outright that things still hurt despite the healing.

First Person:

[the video flicks on to show a darkened bedroom - it's compact, with a single bed and white walls. it'd be pretty barren and utilitarian if it weren't for the Avengers posters tacked up on the walls and the laundry draped over the edge of a dresser drawer. Teddy's arm fills half the screen at first, before he pulls his hand down from readjusting his webcam and gives the video a wan little smile.

he maybe looks a little pale, but it's hard to tell considering the only light in the room is from his computer screen]

So, yet another nightmare. You know, I'm getting pretty tired of this whole insomnia thing, but there's not a lot I can do about it without having to get a prescription from someone for a sleep aid.

[he forces a little chuckle and pushes his fingers back through unruly short blond hair]

I never had this problem before, so I really don't know exactly how to deal with it. It's only been since my mom died...then again, that makes sense, doesn't it? Maybe it's some stage of grieving, but I still don't feel like it's even real.

[he pauses a moment, then pulls up one knee and rests his chin on it, his expression pensive]

Wish Billy was here. It'd probably be easier to sleep, then.

Third Person:

Okay, so maybe it was a big deal after all.

All of it, really. Teddy's life had been changing a lot over the past little bit, since Iron Lad showed up and told him that there was a good reason he could shape-change and things, that that reason was being part of the Avengers fail-safe program, and that he was a superhero. It was enough to make the most stoic of nerds wet themselves, really. A giant shout-out from the world at large. Teddy Altman, you are cool after all. And this time it's for all the right reasons.

Still, it was always just a bit staggering how, in moments like this, meeting one of his teammates could upstage the entire fact that he was part of an Avengers reboot.

"Why won't you just behave?" he asked his reflection, or at least the reflection of a particularly stubborn strand of blond hair that stuck up when all he wanted was for it to smooth down.

Being a superhero? Maybe a little scary - okay, actually really scary - but he could handle it. Going on his third date with Billy Kaplan? Terrifying. Why he could not just be the confident, cool guy he played the part of at school he didn't know, but when Billy was concerned he became all awkward angles and witty banter. He wasn't sure exactly what it was Billy saw in him...

...but he sure as hell wasn't going to turn down the universe when it dropped a superhero team and the perfect boy in his lap. Nope. Scary as it was, Teddy - Hulkling - was going to take it as it came.
